St. Paddy’s Day Block Party

St. Paddy’s Day Block Party on Thursday, March 17th at the A Club and Mootsy’s

Wearing green we headed downtown for the St. Paddy’s Day Block Party on St. Patrick’s Day. Tonight the St. Paddy’s Day Block Party was a benefit for KYRS. I was pretty excited that we had two concerts going on at once so if we weren’t feeling one band we could head over to the other venue. We did a pretty good job seeing most of the bands that played tonight… from the New York Rifles to Patrick Dwyer.

The first artist we caught was Patrick Dwyer from California. He stood on the floor of Mootsy’s with people dancing around him as he played his acoustic guitar. Very sugary smooth vocals and an acoustic pop sound, he had a great attitude as well. There was a small group of people who were having a great time dancing during his set. He did a super fun cover of “The Dog Days Are Over” by Florence and the Machine and you would be surprised how many people were singing along (myself included). Patrick also did a song he said was about a stupid movie but I don’t think it is a stupid movie, that movie being Jurassic Park! People were having fun with the references in the song. I thought he had a lot of personality and it was a good way to get the night started!

I was super excited to see the local all girl punk band Hot Box next at the A Club. They were everything I was dreaming of and more! Being a girl myself it’s always exciting to see girls in bands, and girls in punk rock bands… that’s even more badass. Hot Box is your simple punk three piece with drums, guitar, and bass guitar. All of the girls sang and it was fast, loud, and fun. They opened up with “All the Girls Say” and continued to kick the shit out of the set.

After Hot Box came Team Growl featuring Matthew Winters and Matthew Sonntag at Mootsy’s and I can’t believe I am saying this but this was the first time I have seen Team Growl with both Matt’s! I have seen both Matt’s separately but never together, always seem to miss it. However I think the two together are like peas and carrots, or should I say Fireball and a hangover. Both of their vocals and boisterous personalities fit perfectly. Having the two acoustic guitars is fucking killer as well. Plus I love how they face each other and play; Winters got in the crowd and faced Sonntag during their set a few times. Though per their request they wanted the crowd as close as possible and people got all up in their grills. The two together doing each other’s songs is meant to be. I am really stoked for the pair! Damn.

It was back to the A Club for some more punk rock music from Yamamoto! With Jager shots on the stage they guys of Yamamoto were ready to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and play a few tunes. They reminded us of the Descendents and had fun on stage. The crowd was rocking out and there was some kid with an Irish flag running around. Their set was fast and rambunctious.

I shook my toosh to a little DJ Likes Girls with new super cute short haircut Michelle! The boys of Small Town Nation were getting down as well as Steve continued to spin the tunes for the night in-between sets!

Last but not least for our night was New York Rifles who are not from New York but from Portland, Oregon. I thought the New York Rifles sounded good, I liked the clean vocals! It took a song or two but kids finally started to rock out. We stayed for a few songs and it was straight forward fun rock music.

6 bands and zero beer’s later it was time to go home and say good-bye to St. Patrick’s Day 2011.  The block party was a great idea; I hope Platform Booking does this again!
