Matthew Winters and The Lumineers

Matthew Winters and The Lumineers at ZOLA on Tuesday, July 26th

It was comforting to her Matthew Winters play; it has been a while since I have heard his jagged vocals and catchy guitar riffs enchant my ear buds. However I was a little bummed that I didn’t see Team Growl perform since the entire band was in the audience. Speaking about Team Growl, it was cool to see them stick around through Matthew’s set singing along and standing in the front row. Matthew even did a Team Growl cover, but as Mikey said “…is it a cover since you are in the band…” regardless it was cool to hear Matthew Winters play and sing from his honest heart. He even treated us to a favorite song of mine “Dandelion.” I love the rawness and kindness about Matthew Winters, he always greets me with a hug and a smile no matter what is going on. He has such a unique quality to his singing and songwriting that he is needed in Spokane, just as Team Growl is. I am looking forward to catching the three boys at a live show soon… until then I think there are a few YouTube videos to hold me over.

Through the mountains and through the rivers, The Lumineers traveled from Denver to play a show for the fine folk of Zola in Spokane. With three members, two gentlemen and a lady, they worked it hard for the Zola crowd. I felt a little bad because people were talking loudly during their set but that didn’t stop them; with smiles on their faces and a passion for music they kept on rolling, even jumping into the audience to play a song unplugged. I was definitely awed with the bands ability to play multiple instruments. The lady, Neyla, rocked the piano, cello, and mandolin. While the gentlemen Jeremiah and Wesley could each play the guitar and all three could sing, plus Jeremiah was on drums. It kept it visually entertaining too, to see them switch spots on stage and instruments. A few of the songs that struck my fancy were “Dead Sea” the “Ho Hey” number from when they were in the crowd, “Flowers In Her Hair,” and another that I didn’t catch the name of but it was the last song they performed tonight. Both Matt and I enjoyed their set that we even picked up a copy of their EP and one of their custom temporary tattoos – so rad!!! I am excited to dig into their music and hopefully have a chance to see them again.I love their multi-instrumented stringy inspired harmony enriched tunes… you can check them out here on Facebook!
