Uproar Festival 2011 at the Spokane Arena on Sunday, October 2nd Featuring: Sevendust, Escape the Fate, Bullet For My Valentine, Seether, Three Days Grace, Avenged Sevenfold

We meet again Uproar Festival! Last year we rocked it hard together at Greyhound Park in Post Falls, however this year you came to our hood and tore up the Spokane Arena and its parking lot!

We arrived at the Spokane Arena to a sea of black canopy tents, trucks, tour busses, a stage and Rockstar Energy Drink flags and banners everywhere, in the Parking Lot!!! It was pretty exciting to walk up on the corner of Boone and Howard and see kids and adults rocking out, in the outdoors. I wasn’t expecting an outdoor stage… the only other time I have seen an outdoor stage at the Arena was for a country show. Any who it looked badass.

We got to the Best Buy Music Gear Stage just in time to catch Sevendust. Who came out on stage to a packed crowd with fists in the air. Lajon Witherspoon was talking to the crowd about how his birthday is tomorrow and how thankful he was that because of their fans that at the age of 39 he is still making music, touring, and making his dream come true. They sounded great and we were so lucky to be watching them outside in Spokane in October, with sun!!!  We heard a couple of songs from Sevendust including “Praise,” and “Splinter” before I had to wait in the longest line ever to get inside the Arena! The line was so long to get on the floor that I missed the entire, yes entire, Escape the Fate set. Kind of a bummer, but Matt said it was cool. I am sure I will have a chance to see them again in the future.

Bullet for My Valentine was not fucking around. The girl in front of me in line told me how all she wanted to see today was Bullet for My Valentine, they were who she came to see at Uproar. I did notice the amount of fans each band drew in, you could almost take a poll of the fans by all of the different shirts. Bullet For My Valentine told the crowd right off the bat… they were here to do one thing, and that is play heavy fucking metal. They got a circle pit going and performed “Waking the Demon,” “Your Betrayal,” “The Last Fight,” “Scream Aim Fire,” “Tears Don’t Fall,” and a few other songs. They definitely got the crowd pumped up for Seether, which I didn’t realize how may Seether songs I knew. I recognized their entire set! Which when you know every song of a set… that means you are a fan. The set list went “Gasoline,” “Fine Again,” “Broken,” “Tonight,” “Country Song,” “Rise Above This,” “Fake It,” and “Remedy.” They just killed it, and the three of them made sure to put on a kick ass set. So loved it; even when Shaun Morgan threw his guitar into the drum set at the end. Kind of hoping they will come back to Spokane, and I may have the chance to see them again.

Three Days Grace kept the energy going and took the stage next. At this point in the day, most people saw seven bands before them. In fact Adam Gontier even got off the stage and walked down the side, around the back, and back up the other side and made sure anyone who wasn’t standing got up. Though almost every time I looked behind me or to the side of me people weren’t in their seats they were leaning over, rocking out and singing along. I was shocked by the amount of people who stood up and rocked out for the entire night. Three Days Grace performed “The Good Life,” “Break,” “Pain,” “I Hate Everything About You,” “Home,” “Never Too Late,” “Riot,” and “Animal I Have Become.”

Last but not least Avenged Sevenfold was getting ready to take the stage. There was a shear black curtain covering the front of the stage and when the lights went out, big flames shot up and lit up the stage which had a huge statue of the bands skull logo. The stage looked incredible. There were skulls everywhere and the band looked like badasses, never taking off their sunglasses. M. Shadows also welcomed everyone into the family if this was their first time seeing Avenged Sevenfold. Plus I learned that I guess at the start of their tour M. Shadows said that he would bring up the first person onto the stage who made a sign that read something along the lines of Pull Me Up On Stage. Well he stuck with it and tonight he brought two people up on stage, I thought that was so cool!!! He kind of seems like a softy under that metal shell. He also mentioned how they have been playing outside in the rain and it’s been cold, and he were are in Spokane inside and people have seats. He wanted to fuck shit up, mentioning there are 6,000 of us on the floor so in order to get us going they played some songs that they played on old Warped Tour… beginning with “Second Heartbeat.” Avenged Sevenfold also performed “Nightmare,” “Beast and the Harlot,” “Welcome to the Family,” “Afterlife,” “Buried Alive,” “So Far Away,” “Chapter Four,” “A Little Piece of Heaven,” “Bat Country,” and “Unholy Confessions.” Every time I have seen Avenged Sevenfold they put on an incredible show that has me talking about it for the next couple of days.

Overall it was cool to have Uproar in Spokane and also to have a big rock festival like that in town. Sure there were girls wearing hardly any clothes and few people who had just one too many beers but the music and seeing people have a good time at a show made it worth it. Uproar 2012 is looking like a good time and I can’t wait to see next year’s lineup!

Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson on Sunday, September 25th at the INB Performing Arts Center

It was a complete honor and a treat to see Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson on one stage in Spokane. I couldn’t believe I had the opportunity to see these two icons, and the night was remarkable. At one point in the night Kris even said “I always feel like I am dreaming when I’m up here with Merle.” Kris and Merle warmed up the INB Performing Arts Center with their love for songwriting, their humor, and their music. The crowd would chuckle in between songs or when Merle or Kris would add in a funny line to a song.

Merle, Kris, and the Strangers performed 28 songs for us! How incredible is that?! 28! The Strangers were an incredible band too, top notch musicians. There were quite a handful of knock your socks off solos tonight as well. My favorite part about the night was seeing how much fun these two were having on stage together. They would joke and laugh but when you would see Kris sing along in the back as Merle sang lead, that was cool. Another part of the performance tonight that made it so much fun was the crowd. There were plenty of whistles, hollers, and singing along. The gentlemen that sat behind me knew every word, and he didn’t miss a beat to sing along to every song. He was so stoked to be at the show. At one point he even called his son, held up the phone, and at the end of a Merle Haggard song said “Son now that is a true American legend.” I also loved being able to look down the row I was sitting in and see every single pair of feet tapping along.

Out of the 28 songs Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, and the Strangers performed for us tonight, a few of them included:

“Shipwrecked” – Kris Kristofferson

“I Had a Beautiful Time” – Merle Haggard

“Movin’ On” – Merle Haggard

“I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” – Merle Haggard

“Big City” – Merle Haggard

“Me and Bobby McGee” – Kris Kristofferson

“Help Me Make It Through The Night” – Kris Kristofferson

“They’re Tearin’ The Labor Camps Down” – Merle Haggard

“The Bottle Let Me Down” – Merle Haggard

“I Take A Lot of Pride In What I Am” – Merle Haggard

“Sunday Morning Coming Down” – Kris Kristofferson

“Mama Tried” – Merle Haggard

“It Always Will Be” – Merle Haggard

“Workin’ Man Blues” – Merle Haggard

“T.B. Blues” – Merle Haggard

“Little Ole Wine Drinker Me” – Merle Haggard

“Here Comes That Rainbow”  – Kris Kristofferson

“If I Could Only Fly” – Merle Haggard

“Pilgrim” – Kris Kristofferson

“Okie From Muskogee” – Merle Haggard

“Walkin’ on the Fightin’ Side of Me” – Merle Haggard

“Moment of Forever” – Merle Haggard

“Why Me” – Merle Haggard

There was even a cover of “Folsom Prison Blues” in which we all clapped our hands too! It might sound cheesy but this was a hard working American kind of show. I loved it!!! I grew up listening to old country music and the set tonight just put the biggest smile on my face and was a great way to end the rough weekend I had.

Bush on Friday, September 16h at the Knitting Factory

I was very excited to have a girls night at the Bush concert, well because hello Gavin is such a hottie!!! Well he also has some really great songs too, but it took a few minutes to get over his lovely physique. The Knitting Factory was pretty well filled full of Bush fans all ready to sing along to hits such as “Glycerine” and “Machinehead.” Which threw me off a bit because I kind of spaced on how many hits Bush had… at least five or six. After seeing the show it made me go searching for “Sixteen Stone,” which is a rockin little album.

However back to the concert… the sound was incredible! Plus the band looked completely stoked to be in Spokane on a Friday night performing for a thousand or so people. It seriously seemed like they were genuinely happy to be here tonight, which was rad. Gavin worked it too, he looked like an 18 year old kid at one of his first big concerts… jumping around and putting all of his emotion into the songs. At one point in the night he even got off the stage walked through the crowd, ran up the stairs and rocked the balcony and the VIP… he danced with fans and even made it to the floor and got in the crowd. It was really cool; I don’t think I have ever seen an artist do that at the Knitting Factory. I guess I could say the energy was ALIVE AND KICKIN at the concert. Bush was extremely thankful for us all coming out and singing along. He even thanked the security guy in the front who not only made sure everyone was safe but also rocked out to his songs. I am sure that made the guys night!

Bush didn’t miss a beat on playing the songs we all wanted to hear too! We heard “Everything Zen,” “Little Things,” “Machinehead,” “Glycerine,” “Comedown,” “The Chemicals Between Us,” “Alien,” and “Swallowed.” Bush also played quite a few songs for us of their new album “The Sea of Memories” which was just released on Tuesday, September 13th including “All My Life,” “Afterlife,” “The Mirror of the Signs,” “All Night Doctors,” and “The Sound of Winter.” There was one cover in the mix tonight that happened to be performed during the encore and was awesome, it was a rocked out version of “Come Together” by the Beatles in which everyone sang along too.

It was a killer concert, a concert that stood out in the jumble of shows I have been too. I am glad I got to go, especially with a friend I don’t get to see much. Now “Sixteen Stone” is back into my iTunes rotation, which I guess is a good thing right? The concert rekindled my music love with Gavin and the boys of Bush.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on Thursday, September 15th at the 2011 Spokane County Interstate Fair

I was beside myself to see Joan Jett and the Blackhearts! I have always looked up to Joan Jett for being a female punk rocker and her set tonight put me on Cloud 9. Joan Jett dedicated tonight’s set for her mother because tonight she would have been 80 years old. I thought that was very sweet. I heard every song I wanted to hear including a cover that surprised the hell out of me!

I bopped my head along to every song with my friend Dawn and Joan Jett’s youngest fan, Dawn’s son Riley; at the age of four 4 he was just dying to hear “I Love Rock N Roll.” Opening with “Bad Reputation,” the night rolled from one song to the next including “Cherry Bomb,” “Light of Day,” “Do You Want To Touch Me,” “Go Home,” “You Drive Me Wild,” “Backlash,” “The French Song,” “I Love Playin’ With Fire,” “Naked,” “Fake Friends,” “I Love Rock N Roll,” “Crimson and Clover,” “Hate Myself for Loving You,” “A.C.D.C.,” “Everyday People,” and a few more. Plus the cover that knocked my socks off my feet… “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” by Igggy & the Stooges; that was so unexpected and incredible! It was also really cool that Joan Jett treated us to some Runaways songs, especially “Cherry Bomb.”

Joan Jett is in her early 50’s and she is still in great shape, can sing, rock the guitar, and put on a killer show – I mean really how is she not the Queen of Rock N Roll?! I am still excited to talk about the concert days later… it was a really fun night. Plus now Riley just loves “Bad Reputation,” partially because it’s in Shrek… but hey he is only four years old!

Dave Matthews Band Caravan at the Gorge Amphitheater on Sunday, September 4th

It was exciting coming to the Dave Matthews Band Caravan at the Gorge because I love music festivals. I love how festivals bring in multiple stages, activities, and lots of other vendors. There is always something to find and do whether its music related or not. The Dave Matthews Band Caravan layout was very similar to Sasquatch Music Festival’s layout, so it was pretty easy for us to come in and figure out what was going on. There were three stages (Plaza, Meadow, Main) and nine bands performing. The nine bands were Infantree, Antibalas, Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band, The Moondoggies, Dave & Tim, Dispatch, The Low Anthem, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, and Dave Matthews Band. For the most part it was pretty easy to get to see most of the artists performing today from the plaza stage to the main stage.

Once we got inside the venue and were situated Antibalas was the first group we saw perform today. Antibalas is an afrobeat band that had everyone’s hips shaking! I counted 11 artists in the group on stage which also included a horn section, drums, bongos, singers and more. It spiced up the morning and their music definitely got the day rolling. After watching Antibalas we headed down the hill to see Moscow, Idaho’s Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band! It was so awesome to see Josh Ritter on the main stage at the Gorge and it had to have been cool from him since he was only a few hours from home. Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band were working it on the main stage and Josh was even wearing all black – he had to be hot! They had ear to ear grins on their faces and at one point Josh got down on his knees and was orchestrating the crowd to sing along. A few of the Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band songs we heard included “Good Man,” “Wolves,” “Right Moves,” “Girl in the War,” and a few more. After watching a few from Josh Ritter we did head up the hill to catch the tail end of the Moondoggies set. Matt is a huge fan and was stoked to be able to catch at least a few of their songs.

All of the sudden there was a huge, huge, huge crowd at the Meadow stage and it clearly made sense because Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds were set to hit the stage at 3:45pm. It was crazy over there and yet very cool because I was standing off to the side of the stage and I heard multiple people say… this is the closest they have ever been to Dave!!! The excitement was ringing from the crowd of diehard fans. It was also so cool to stand up by the stage because from the first song on 90% of the crowd knew every single word to each song and they quietly sang along. It was incredible. Dave Matthews was wearing his expensive pajamas on stage and together the two strummed and picked away, along with telling a few stories like Dave’s random one about the sound tortoises make while having sex. Yep, he went there. At one point Dave Matthews even sat back and quietly watched (along with the rest of us) Tim Reynolds just pick away at his guitar. Watching Dave and Tim perform together was a great addition to the Sunday Lineup.

We headed down the hill to check out Dispatch for a few songs and there was a party going on down there! I haven’t had the chance to see Dispatch before and it was fun to watch the crowd get into their set. They had an indie roots kind of jam band-ish set that was perfect for the weather and the crowd. We headed back up the hill to grab a bite to eat and watched a few songs from the Low Anthem. There was an overall relaxed sunny day feel to the festival which was nice. It was perfect for all ages and there were plenty of families at the show; I saw numerous little tikes running around in the grass and dancing to the songs.

I was so excited to see Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros perform, partially because each time I have seen them in concert I miss watching them perform “Home;” I have heard it in the background on my way to another stage or what not but I haven’t actually got to stand and dance, sing to the entire song…  until today! It was pretty cool to see Chad from Dispatch run by me to watch “Home” too. I also did all of the above (sing & dance) to a few other songs like “40 Days,” “Janglin,” “Carries On,” “Black Water,” and “Desert Song.”  Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros treated us to a new song called “If You Want,” which was a fun one to sing along too once we learned the chorus. It was cool to see Alex jump into the crowd and interact with the audience a lot during their set too. However after hearing “Home” it was time to run down the hill for the main event of the night, the final event of the weekend, Dave Matthews Band.

I have been to the whole Labor Day Dave event once before and was awed at the amount of fans that knew the songs, had the tattoos, and were so excited to watch Dave Matthews Band perform. It was the same energy tonight, the kind of energy that makes you excited even if you don’t know all of the songs. Of course Dave Matthews Band sounded perfect! Dave mentioned how tonight they were going to keep it smooth and slowly end the weekend. He also said the audience looked delicious, like dip you in chocolate sauce and eat you delicious. It is impressive to see him with his guitar and Tim but it’s a whole other level to see him with the full band. The sound is rich and you can’t help but not love the crowd singing along. During “Crash Into Me” we looked over and noticed Alex from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros standing ten feet away from us enjoying the DMB set too. It was a cool experience and a perfect night. Sunday was a relaxing day of music with some dancing and plenty of sun shine. Matt said it right… Labor Day Weekend, the stage at the Gorge belongs to Dave Matthews Band… it wouldn’t be right for another band to headline there when every year he captivates the audience and has us all on our feet, singing and dancing along. We are lucky to be one of the four stops on the Dave Matthews Band Caravan this year and we can all only hope that Dave will return to the Gorge on Labor Day 2012.

Carbon Leaf at Pig Out in the Park 2011 on Saturday, September 3rd

Matt got me hooked on Carbon Leaf, so it was fun to see the show together and sing along to their songs and even dance a smidge. Carbon Leaf has a “warm your heart” sound that can be described as rustic country notes mixed into their fun rock songs! These boys also have some honey harmonies and they always had smiles on their faces. Their music brought a good vibe to the Clock Tower Stage at Pig Out in the Park!

Matt has probably one of the coolest stories with this band, a long time ago he put together this promotion called the Carbon Leaf 500 where people won passes to go race the band at Fast Kart! The band, winners, and even the people working had a blast. Ever since then anytime Matt hears Carbon Leaf he talks about how much fun he had.

Carbon Leaf worked it for Pig Out in the Park and performed a handful of songs including “What About Everything,” “7 Brides for 7 Sinners,” “Let Your Troubles Roll By,” “Desperation Song,” “One Prairie Outpost,” “Torn & Tattered,” “Life Less Ordinary,” and a handful more. We heard a little harmonica action as well as the most dangerous guitar in the west! It was so cool to see the band play to a huge crowd in Spokane. I also enjoyed looking around and watching two best friends in the front and a dad with his two kids all singing along. It was a great way to spend such a nice night in Spokane!

On our way back I finally indulged and bought Deep Fried Oreos. So hot and gooey, I had four. Great treats and tunes are two things you will always find at Pig Out In the Park!

Leon Russell & Mon Cheri at Pig Out In The Park 2011 on Friday, September 2nd

Pig Out in the Park was packed last night, from kids to adults everyone had a plate bowl or cup in their hand and smiles on their faces. There were two bands playing at once tonight that we wanted to check out, Mon Cheri and Leon Russell. We first went to the Clock Tower Stage where the meadow was packed full of people all awaiting Leon Russell to take the stage.

Before Leon Russell took the stage Bill Burke came out to thank all of the people that helped and worked to make Pig Out in the Park happen. He also introduced Elisha Mitchell in singing our national anthem. It has been so long since I have seen someone sing the national anthem (over a recording) that it gave me chills. Elisha had an incredible voice and sang our national anthem perfectly. I stood with my hat off and my hand on my chest as I got goose bumps. Plus it was very cool to hear the entire group of people chime in with the last 8 to 10 words.

Leon Russell looked like a complete rockstar with his shades and cowboy hat on. We still can’t get over the fact that we saw him in concert! Leon Russell has worked with plenty of legends including Elton John, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, B.B. King, Herb Albert, Frank Sinatra, George Harrison and hundreds more. The guy is an incredible song writer! Plus we do have to acknowledge the fact and congratulate him on being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this past March. Matt and I along with the hundreds of other people under our Clock Tower danced the night away to his set of songs! A few of the songs we danced too included “Sweet Little Angel,” “A Song For You,” “Jumping Jack Flash/Poppa Was A Rolling Stone/Kansas City,” and he went out with a bang beginning with “Great Balls of Fire” and then going into “Roll Over Beethoven!” Leon Russell’s band was top notch and everyone on stage looked like they were having a ball. It is so cool that Spokane had a free Leon Russell concert at Pig Out in the Park, way to go Bill Burke and Craig Heimbigner – that was a blast!

During the middle of Leon’s set we had to run over to the River Stage and check out our friends Mon Cheri! Tonight was a little different though because one of the bands member’s Caroline wasn’t able to perform. Now I will say they still sounded good, but it’s just not right when one member is missing from the band. However for the circumstances the boys of Mon Cheri worked it for the crowd and beer garden! They even got a couple to get up a dance, who danced very well at that! It was fun to sit with my friend Karyn and sing along and enjoy the cool crisp night. I definitely think Mon Cheri is one of the best local bands Spokane has to offer and they always put on a great live show! I bopped my head and sang a little back up vocals (on the bench) too “Too Hard Too Fast,” “Love Is Being Wanted,” “Bizarre Love Triangle,” “She,” and “Changes.” Mon Cheri was happy to be closing out the River Stage tonight at Pig Out in the Park, and as always it was a treat to see them live!

After spending Friday night at Pig Out in the Park I am looking forward to Saturday night with Carbon Leaf and a few others! Check out who is playing tonight HERE. Don’t forget to bring some cash so you can Pig Out… I am thinking about trying a deep fried oreo – yum! See you there!

Kathy Griffin at the INB Performing Arts Center on Sunday, August 28th

I love the firecracker Kathy Griffin and her comedy, so I was extremely excited to check out her live shows! I have watched countless episodes of My Life on the D List and seen various other things she has partaken in, like her quick snip role in Eminem’s music video for “The Real Slim Shady.” Tonight’s comedy set for Kathy was talking about the Kardashians, Real Housewives of every freakin’ city, Anderson Cooper, her lunch dates with Marlo Thomas and Gloria Steinem, hot pink fanny packs, eye fucking, and so much more! Of course Maggie, Kathy’s mom was mentioned quite often too! We all must “Tip It for Maggie!”

It is actually pretty awesome because Maggie, Kathy’s mom actually married in Spokane at Fairchild Air Force Base… how cool is that! Kathy kept bringing up how her mom talked about Spokane and their cotton clouds! Overall Kathy’s two hours of straight comedy was a great way to end the weekend and laugh it up! However what made the night, thee best was on my walk back to the car my friend Nick and I saw a little group of 20 or so people huddled around someone. KATHY! So we waited for about 5 minutes and got to say hi and get our photo taken with her, it was the best way to end the night! She was so cool to stand around after the show and sign books, take photos, and more. Very nice and tiny little firecracker! I am sure she will be back again in the future, and when she comes don’t miss her show!

Rock Hard at the Park 2011 Friday, August 26th at the Greyhound Park & Event Center

Featuring: Red Line Chemistry, Volbeat, All that Remains, Five Finger Death Punch, and Korn

I wasn’t lucky enough to get out of work until later in the afternoon but as soon as I finished I was running out the door and hightailing it to I90. I don’t know if anyone else was experiencing this but, I was stuck going around 25mph from Sullivan to a mile before the exit. It was the weirdest thing there wasn’t any construction really and no accidents so I was like what the heck when everything cleared right up before the exit. However the slow driving and parking and all of that jazz resulted in me not getting into the venue until Volbeat was just about to start.

Denmark’s Volbeat killed it at Rock Hard at the Park; with the blistering sun shining down and high temperatures these guys fucking worked their asses off. I am sure they made a lot of new fans today. Outside of the event shirts I saw more Volbeat t-shirts than anything else. Their fans are loyal and will take every opportunity they can to see Volbeat in concert. We hung out with our good friend Shawn from Rockstar Radio™ today and one of his favorite bands is Volbeat. He has seen them three times this year, then saw them tonight and is heading back home to see them in Missoula on Saturday! He has been a fan of them since 2009 and has sworn by the band from the start. It was cool to see him sing along to the music and rock out. In between each of their songs all you would see were thousands of horns in the air. A couple of the songs Volbeat performed today included “The Human Instrument,” “Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood,” “Sad Man’s Tongue,” “Still Counting,” “Pool of Booze, Booze, Booza,” “Fallen,” and even a cover of “I Only Want To Be With You.” I love how the band is able to rock metal, punk, rockabilly and classic rock n roll into their music. They were a really fun band to see live and I can’t get enough of their song “Sad Man’s Tongue.” Cash, Presley, Volbeat.

All That Remains was glad to be in Idaho for people in Spokane as thousands of kids and adults put their firsts in the air. They told the crowd “…we are going to play the heaviest goddamn shit you’re going to hear tonight,” and I am pretty sure that was accomplished. All That Remains’ extreme metal music had kids letting their energy out in the mosh-pit and screaming at the top of their lungs. There was a lot of guitar shredding and head banging that’s for sure! All That Remains performed songs including “The Last Time,” “Two Weeks,” “This Calling,” “The Air That I Breathe,” “Hold On,” and a few others. They definitely got the crowd ready for Five Finger Death Punch.

Their name alone sounds like it could beat the shit of you, but their live shows are killer. This is first tour with Five Finger Death Punch’s new bass player Chris Kael. I have seen them in concert before and each time they bring on the energy but tonight they did something that showed the softer side of metal and won me over! Before they started their song “White Knuckle,” 5FDP brought up bunch of little kids and their dads from the crowd on stage. Then during the whole song they all rocked out together, it was awesome to see these kids on stage head banging and putting up their little baby horns. Like Shawn said that is going to be the highlight of those kids life. 5FDP treated us to some new songs including their new single “Over and Under It,” which is about how the internet will piss you off. Ivan talked about how he goggled the band’s name and read things like he committed suicide or the band broke up or he has 14 kids, and how that is all false and in resulting came a kick ass new song! Along with “Over and Under It”  5FDP also performed “The Bleeding,” “Bad Company,” “Never Enough,” “Hard to See,” “No One Get’s Left Behind,” “Far From Home,” and a few other songs including an encore of “The Way of the Fist.” Which was so appropriate because right during that song the three of us were standing there drinking our last beer of the night when all of these shirtless assholes decided to pick fights, too much testosterone I tell ya.  That also makes me wonder though, is a rock show a rock show without a fight?

Also major props to Rock 94.5 for being one of the first radio stations in the country to play 5FDP first single “The Bleeding,” very fitting that the band killed it for the stations Rock Hard in the Park!

Last but not least came Korn. It was actually pretty cool, I was standing off to the side of the stage along the railing and when the lights dropped I noticed a flashlight running across the grass and escorts. I knew that was Jonathan Davis and Munky as soon as they got close to the stage stairs. This may sound dorky but I totally watched them prep each other up for the show and get amped and excited and it was really fucking cool! Another really cool thing was how badass Jonathan looked in his kilt; especially when he fucking rocked the bagpipes on stage. They sounded great it was just as cool seeing them tonight as it was when we saw them last summer at Mayhem Fest at White River. I totally sang along to songs like “Blind,” “Here to Stay,” “Freak on a Leash,” “Got the Life,” “Shoots and Ladders,” and more. It was pretty cool during “Shoots and Ladders” they totally went into a little “One” by Metallica. Korn is still rockin’ and I am stoked to say that I have seen them twice now and they killed it both times.

Run on Sentence and Dovekins at the Porch on Monday, August 22nd

Tonight was my first time at the Porch and it’s such a lovely space! With plenty of windows and tall ceilings, art and some chairs, even a few couches and music… it created warmth. All ages too, but if you want an adult beverage you can go across the street. There is a bar with pull tabs, oh yeah!!! One of the members of The City We Live In won $50 and bought the bar a round of shots; we hadn’t arrived yet but that is pretty badass and I am a little disappointed I missed it. I did decide to give the pull tabs a shot and won a $1 but then bought four more pull tabs and still lost. Even though I didn’t win big bucks, it was still fun to play and I was excited to see the bar had Coors Light on tap. Less Calories.

Portland’s Run on Sentence took me by surprise and knocked the socks right off my feet. I fancied Dustin Hamman’s ability to play these swanky little jazz numbers complete with a mouth trumpet and then to take it down a notch and be another character telling us a story with his acoustic guitar and run on sentences. On stage were three gentlemen on drums, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar. Dustin asked a random question, if anyone had a sweatband because if he doesn’t have one he will dig a hole into his arm with his guitar. A lady in the crowd handed him her scarf and he wrapped it around his arm, he then joked and said he looked like Steven Tyler. A lot of Run on Sentences songs were perfect for dancing too, there were a few ladies in the crowd bending their knees and shaking their hips (myself one of them). Run on Sentence performed for us songs including “The Afterlife,” “Carrie,” “8th Street Music Co” “These Hills” and for his very last song of the night Dustin performed alone. He sat on the stage and unplugged his microphone to sing “I Am the Blood.” That was so cool and the perfect way to end the set making the show intimate. Check out one of Dustin’s songs “Stonewall” courtesy of NPR Here.

I was “across the street” and as the sun went to bed I walked outside to notice the Porch lit up and music floating out the door. I ran across the street and walked into the Porch to find Dovekins on the floor with all of the lights off except their two lamps and the band frolicking around the floor. I watched for a few seconds as the band danced with their shadows and switched instruments almost every song. Trombone, banjo, upright bass, drums, clarinet, cello, harmonica, guitar, mandolin, accordion, keys and I am sure there were even a few I missed. Their free spirits lightened up the room (even though it was dark) as they were animated and climbing on top of chairs, tables and even couches while they performed. I also noticed how it seemed like almost every member of the band had their moment to sing their song. It was an enchanting adventure, I kind of felt like I was whisked away and I became one of the Lost Boys in Neverland. Dovekins… they can sing, write, and perform countless instruments. I had such an excellent time watching them perform and was feeding off their energy and passion for music. They took a live show to the next level and made it unforgettable. They got me excited about touring bands coming through Spokane! I will find away to see Dovekins again, someday in the future. Hopefully they can come back to Spokane.
