Ryan Larson Band & The Carter Twins
Big Al’s Country Club on Wednesday, June 24th

Nothing says country like Big Al’s in Stateline, Idaho. Complete with Mug Bogs, Mechanical Bulls, Bra’s hanging from the ceiling, keg car races, and the biggest/best square dancing floor around.

Matt, Coyote, and I headed out to catch the up and coming Carter Twins! Opening local act the Ryan Larson Band was a fun way to get the night started. With their front man Ryan Larson towering over his microphone, his deep country vocals didn’t sound half bad. You don’t get to see local country acts in Spokane much so it is always refreshing to see one, mixes it up a bit. The band had a good vibe going and played fun covers that everyone knew making it fun to sing and dance along.

The Carter Twins are just 19, young “pups” as Coyote said and they knew how to put on a show. The entire band bursting with energy and spunk they pranced along the stage clapping and getting the crowd excited. I loved their enthusiasm even when there wasn’t a large crowd on the floor. Everyone knows how Taylor Swift sings about how boys can break your heart, well The Carter Twins said wait a minute girls break hearts too – and took that and ran with it. Mixing in a little bit of pop it is definitely the newer country sound.

One of the twins played a keyboard which you don’t see in a country band as a main instrument, or an instrument one of the front men would play. I really dug it. I got a chance to talk with the boy’s mom and she was just as sweet as could be and I loved how the boys let her come along on tour with them. Watch out girls! You are going to eat these boys up they are kind, cute, and hello musicians! Their song “Heart like Memphis” will win your young teenage heart over in a second. It is going to be exciting to see where these boys are going to go and how quick it will all happen!

Check them out on Myspace if you don’t know who they are and keep a look out for these young pups!

James Otto
May 27th – Big Al’s – Stateline, Idaho

The night started by a smooth drive over to Stateline, Idaho with Matt’s Hero, Coyote and his wonderfully sweet wife Jenny. The four of us arrived to the one of a kind Big Al’s for a night of country music and line dancing (we only watched the line dancing). Jennifer Lynn opened up for the night and had the crowd line dancing on the floor. I was impressed that she kept three-inch red stilettos on her whole set, owch. This was my first time out at Big Al’s (not working for the radio station) and the place was packed full of people and cigarette smoke. The smoke was a little much to handle, which lead to frequent outdoor visits. Must say I am mad I was not thinking and wore a dress; because they totally have a mechanical bull that had my name written all over it. Next time I am so there. It was good to see all of the KIX 96 Better Country kids that I have not seen in a while Big Dan, Country Cleatus, and their lovely women.

When James Otto took the stage all I could do was just shake my head in awe at how tall he is. He is almost seven feet tall. Like he said women don’t want no Kenny Chesney who is up to his nipples, you want someone who can take care of business. James and his band sounded super clear. They had their shit lined up and it was perfect. I am not the biggest country fan in the world, I do like it, but James Otto had me movin’ my cowboy boots and shakin’ my head during his whole set. He is a ladies man. He mentioned how 99% of the people at his shows are women. It is okay if a few guys show up, it’s just more for the rest of them! It was cool to see the steel guitar being played during some of his songs. Every single guy in his band is very talented. James Otto moved to Nashville twelve years ago and it took twelve years to an overnight success. James Otto had Big Al’s movin’ and I am sure he will do it again in the future. When he does be there with your boots on and get ready for a good time.

Lost Trailers w/ Copper Mountain Band
3.27.2009 – Big Al’s – State Line, ID

8 Thoughts

1. It’s really cool that the Copper Mountain Band is all cousins except the drummer.

2.The girl signing has more energy than most country lead signers today.

3. The Copper Mountain Band played a cover of “Gun Powder and Lead” by Miranda Lambert with the same firepower she performs it with.

4. The Lost Trailers are the real deal they have been playing together since high school and are a real band not one put together by a record label.

5. It was awesome to see the members of the Copper Mountain Band standing on a picnic table and dancing and signing along with the Lost Trailers.

6. The Lost Trailers opened with “Holler Back” and the crowd went crazy dancing and signing. Their “Holler Back” song is way better than the No Doubt singers “Holler Back Girl”.

7. I would like to thank the Lost Trailers for a great night and for letting me be part of their team huddle before they took the stage.

8. Both bands were great at Big Al’s. They both had great fun and interaction with the crowd. To bad the Gonzaga Men’s Basketball team was playing in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament at the same time. More people should have been at this show.

Jeremy McComb
3.13.09 – Big Al’s – State Line, ID

5 Thoughts On Jeremy McComb

1.) I have listened to Jeremy’s music since I was an intern at the radio station (KIX 96 in Spokane) and he was the afternoon DJ on the country station and in the band Trace County.

2.) Since then Jeremy’s talent and song writing skills have been improved so much. Pick up is album “My side of town” you will not be disappointed. The kid has it all.

3.) It’s always good to see someone perform in their back yard. Jeremy has played at the Big Al’s (known then as Kelly’s) since he was 14 years old. He tore the place to shreds. He is one of those performers that loves what he does for a living. Not for one minute did he look like he was just going through the motions. He was having fun and looked like he was at home kicking ass on stage with one of the best backing bands country music has to offer.

4.) He did a cover of “6th Avenue Heartbreak” by The Wallflowers and you would have thought it was a country song just by listening to the lyrics and seeing how he performs it.

5.) Make sure to go see Jeremy McComb when he stops by your town an plays a smaller club. Those days are almost over for him because soon and I mean very soon that kid is going to be a Super Star.
