Lucero on Thursday, February 10th at the Knitting Factory Concert House

All the way from Memphis Lucero tore apart the Knitting Factory for about 50 people. Yep just 50 or so people came out to see this incredible band, I am a little ashamed of Spokane. However Lucero made sure that the people who came to the show were treated correctly. Not only did they play a full set but they let the people in the crowd yell out songs they wanted to hear and they played them! I have only been to a handful of shows in my entire life where that gets to happen. I think it is so cool and to hear your favorite band play your jam, that is unforgettable.

I don’t know too much about Lucero but after the show tonight I can’t wait to pick up an album. It’s rough and soulful, Lucero packs a punch. They have a unique twang alternative punk country sound that is perfect for dancing!  I was instantly locked by the steel guitar and Ben’s vocals. There are six guys in the band and the instruments included two guitars, bass guitar, drums, steel guitar, keys and even a little accordion! After two or three songs everyone migrated from the bar to front of the house where unfortunately you couldn’t bring your drinks. Ben was really upset about that because that meant no one could buy him a shot. I would be upset too.

Lucero might not have a huge fan base in Spokane but they do have a loyal one; every single person standing on the floor was singing along to all of the songs. Even the rare songs that people requested! You could tell the tattooed boys of Lucero were genuine nice people. They kept saying thank you so much for coming out on a Thursday night and Ben even said “Ya’ll are kickin’ ass!” They even told the crowd we were being so polite, but I thought they were being polite too! The fact that they played songs that the crowd was yelling out, made it killer. It was personal and fun. We even got to see Ben do a few solo songs! I would see Lucero again in a heartbeat, I am ashamed they weren’t more people at the show. I guess all I can say is if you were not at the show you missed out. Thank you, Lucero for kicking ass and putting on one hell of a show.

Empyrean Farewell Party Night 3; Goodbye

FEATURING: Zack Graham – Liz Rognes – Danielle Estelle – Josh Hedlund – Kurt Olson – Joel Smith – Madison Whitney -Cathedral Pearls (Karli Fairbanks) – Ken Arkind – Kevin Long – Buddy Wakefield – The Head and the Heart

We arrived at the Empyrean tonight around 5pm and had to drag ourselves out the door with our heads hung low at 12:30am because we knew we had to be up at 4am for work the next day. We thanked Chrisy on our way out, and even though we know we’ll see her and Michelle again it was still tough. They were the first ones to ever welcome Check It Out Music into the Spokane Music Scene and for that there will always be a place in our hearts for the Riddle sisters. However, we weren’t the only ones who felt that way. Every single person that graced the stage over the past three days had some way of saying thanks to the Empyrean and to Michelle and Chrisy. Countless songs and poems were dedicated to them, and many Empyrean stories were told.

I loved how the final Empyrean shows were not just about music, but also focused on local and national poets. They did a great job of showcasing the talent that has danced on their stages and breathed into their microphones. Tonight we got to listen to a few Spokane poets perform original pieces; some of them we saw at the Poetry Slam on Thursday as well. All of the poets locally and nationally knocked the words out of my mouth. Buddy Wakefield was a delight; I loved how he had Joel Howard freestyle a little mandolin action for him during his set. He also had Ken Arkind play a dash of harmonica during a couple of his pieces. Buddy had energy, and kept us laughing with little comments and jokes. I also love how one of the girls in the audience told the crowd to shut their traps during his set, he loved that as well. Buddy is on a book tour without a book, because his Mac crashed and well now the book is gone. However, DO NOT give him suggestions he has tried it all and is just trying to get over the situation. Book or not, Buddy killed it!

There were two new artists for me tonight, Liz Rognes and Josh Hedlund. Both were a delight. Liz had this spunky personality and rocked an acoustic guitar with Pat McHenry on lap steel and Kurt Olson on stand up bass. Liz had us laughing and played a few songs for us including “Lovely Things,” “Sunset,” “Kiss Me Goodbye,” and “What I Can’t Have.” Josh Hedlund was from Sandpoint, and he said he was nervous, but I thought he sounded amazing! Josh Hedlund can play the acoustic guitar with such intricacy and his voice is humble yet rich. He filled up the room with warm music yet sent chills down my spine. I am so glad he could come down for the final night.

It was so fitting for Joel Smith to play; he is such a talented artist. Oddly enough tonight was his first time playing at the Big Dipper Empyrean location, and also his last! It was great to hear Joel Smith perform live again (it’s been a long time). To hear him and Karli Fairbanks play together was so great. They met at the Empyrean, and to see them play and dedicate the last song to Michelle was wonderful and sweet.

Cathedral Pearls, featuring Mrs. Karli was grand. She had Joel come up and play the banjo with her for a few songs.  My favorite part during the Cathedral Pearls set was when she played “Whiskey Flowers” alone and the band joined in the middle of the song, it was really powerful. Kevin Long with his brothers also just warmed my heart. It was cool to hear Kevin with more “sound” to his songs. After seeing Joel Smith, Karli Fairbanks, and Kevin Long I was reminded of how much I miss seeing these artists. All of them in which I was introduced to at the Empyrean.

Last but not least the Head and the Heart took the stage. They finally got the crowd out of their chairs, up and dancing. They once again sounded fantastic! We saw them this summer at the Empyrean and was blown away, it was great to see them play the final performance we would see at the Empyrean. They even had bright yellow screen printed posters for tonight’s show. I liked being able to sing along to their songs tonight, even though there was no way I could even compare to their harmonies. Their self titled album has been on constant rotation for quite some time now on my I tunes. I sang at the top of my lungs to “Cats and Dogs,” “Coeur d’Alene,”  “Sounds Like Hallelujah,” “Ghosts” and “Honey Come Home.” I noticed I wasn’t the only one singing along too, and most of the kids were dancing!

Karli nailed it on the head tonight; she told the crowd as she stood on the stage alone “…there really will never be a place like this again.”

The final chapter has been written, the record has stopped spinning, and the microphones are quite but the Empyrean will always be talked about in our Spokane Scene.

Empyrean’s Farewell Party Night 1 Thursday, January 13th

Featuring: Table Top Joe, Greg Beumer, Joel Howard, Thomas Bechard, Spokane Poetry Slam, Dead Serious Lovers, and Monuments

When we arrived at the Empyrean a little before six the chairs were almost full. By 7:30pm there wasn’t even room to stand with people of all ages even a baby in the room. It was a night full of music and poetry and a night to catch up with our friends from the Empyrean.

There were four bands and singer songwriters I hadn’t seen before who played tonight; Table Top Joe, Greg Beumer, Thomas Bechard, and Monuments. Lovely enough Greg Beumer is Rhea’s dad, Thomas we have run into at various shows (but were formally introduced tonight), and the drummer in Monuments was Matt Bogue. Faces we knew just no idea of their hidden musical talents.

Table Top Joe got the evening rolling, with Greg Beumer joining him on his first song. His sister sang with him on one song, and his brother with him on a few. Table Top Joe played for us new songs and old songs, even a song called “Mechanical Trees” which he played at his first (and now last) Empyrean show.

Greg Beumer played after Table Top Joe and his warm rustically sweet vocals, acoustic guitar, and harmonica added musical color to the room. He is a musical juggler too, it is so cool when you see people play the guitar and the harmonica at the same time. That is some serious multitasking! He added a big thanks to “…Michelle and Chirsy for all the fun times, great memories, and all the work you put into this place.” Greg also played a song about his favorite friend Leroy with a Terradactyl on her neck. It was sweet, and I didn’t even know I knew Leroy until after his set! At the very end he said his hands had warmed up enough and he blew us all away with some seriously fast picking, that I thought just maybe I saw smoke coming from his acoustic guitar! I am glad to have talked to Greg and to be able to see him play on such an important night!

Joel Howard even after running sound all night got up on stage with his mandolin and played a few songs for us. It was also too bad kids were talking a lot during his set because he is a really talented musician in Spokane. But, regardless of the rude audience he stuck with it and played his songs. I LOVE that he played the mandolin, so distinct!

The funny thing with Thomas Bechard was I have totally run into him a handful of times and did the whole smile thing, but I don’t think we were ever introduced. So it was funny to see him up on stage! HE KNOCKED MY SOCKS OFF! I told Matt, he sounds just like John Mayer and later in the night Thomas brought up that he was going to play a cover song. He gave us two options one being John Mayer and of course I yelled John Mayer; which he ended up playing “Daughters.” I told him it was a good thing he sounded like John Mayer. John Mayer regardless… Thomas Bechard has some gorgeous vocals! He told the crowd “…Michelle and Chrisy spent a lot of time, sweat, tears & money into this place, the best thing we can do is give it a proper goodbye.” I couldn’t agree more and I think we accomplished that on Night 1.

Mark Anderson did a fantastic job rallying the Spokane Poetry Slam! He was funny and organized! So many kids signed up that at first there was an open mic, then 8 people competed in the Poetry Slam! We heard Jill, Terry, Nick, Madison, Zac, Tyler, Daniel, and Molly who were all judged by five judges in the crowd picked that night (I am sorry if I butchered the spellings of any names.) Molly and Zac got the highest scores therefore they got to read an original piece again and Zac was picked as the overall champ. Which was way cool because Zac actually won the first Empyrean Spokane Poetry Slam and now he won the last Empyrean Spokane Poetry Slam; it was very fitting! I loved the poetry from everyone! It was really cool to see a poetry slam, I want to check one out again!

Dead Serious Lovers won my heart over at the end of the night. Henry and Vaughn sound so perfectly dark and stunning! Their new album has been on playing on my iPod quite often so to be able to hear songs like “Army of Transparent Bodies” live (which is my jam) was pretty heavenly! I am begging them to play more shows, because I do believe they are one of Spokane’s best bands. I am also glad they played the Empyrean Farewell because I can’t count how many times I have seen them play there.

Cyrus Fell Down is actually playing Friday night, so Monuments was the next and the final band of the night. This three piece with no live vocals was a deep sea dive of experimental rock. I really liked it and they had great chemistry. It was heavy in sound and slightly dark but stood out with really clean shredding. I am kind of disappointed in myself for not seeing this band before. I hope I get to see more of their name on show flyers. It was a great way to close out the first night, with a bang and high energy.

I would like to wrap up night one with this quote from Henry (which was directed to Matt) about Hallelujah Soul Explosion tomorrow night “…it’s going to blow your balls off, bring some diapers.”

We hope to see you there.

Ivan and Alyosha, Pablo Trucker, Pickwick on Saturday, October 30th at the Empyrean

Tonight was a stacked lineup (like Jenga) of three Seattle bands, who all warmed up the Empyrean on our cold rainy Saturday night in Spokane. Those who went and stayed for the evening got an earful of lucid vocals, tight harmonies, and strong tunes.

Ivan and Alyosha took the stage first. There in front of us were four gentlemen in a straight row. No drums, but acoustic guitar with a little tambourine and shakers and to top it off four piece harmonies. It was quiet but attention grabbing to see this forefront of guys with vocals and charming chemistry. I guess they fired their drummer… I am not sure what they sounded like with the fifth member but I thought they were grand tonight. It was the perfect way to get the evening rolling. We even did some clapping along to a song or two and they treated us with new music. I am very excited to learn more about Ivan and Alyosha. Man, Seattle is just blossoming with talent.

I am loving Pablo Trucker more and more each time I see them. For a three piece they really pack a smooth soulful punch; like an Americana waltz through alt-country. It warms you up, and a few times made me want to dance but no one else was so I just tapped my cowboy boots in the corner. It was funny there was a bit of a hiccup and Brian (singer) justifies it perfectly as … if you want to listen to our songs our CD’s are right over there… you’re getting the full Pablo Trucker experience tonight! Which is so true and is one of the beauties of live music. It’s un-expecting and one of a kind. Pablo Trucker’s set was rich and full of sound I am excited to listen to their latest EP that we picked up titled “The Gossamer Sessions.” Also big thanks to Kory for telling us about this show, perfect way to spend our Saturday night!

“We’re Pickwick from Seattle, Happy Halloween!” All five members of Pickwick took the stage next with Kory from Pablo Trucker as well. It was great to hear Pickwick play, we hadn’t seen them since Elkfest 2009. Since it is Halloween weekend the band decided to come out as Frenchie and the Nerds! Everyone had taped glasses and small ties, suspenders, sweaters and Galen was french-fries. It was awesome! The entire set was stellar packing in percussion, beats, and well Galen has some seriously smooth vocals that are so soulful! I mean really who knew french-fries could sing so well? They have a great sound that is perfect for any mood, especially for tonight. They decided to take a random poll and asked us who our favorite Halloween nerd was, by applause… I think Cassady on Keys had the most applause but they all looked AWESOME! They played us their two new songs which are off their gorgeous new 45 Myths Vol. 1 “Hacienda Motel” and “When Rosa Speaks.” Which we are listening to right now and LOVE it. We are so jacked to get the rest of the 45’s when they come out! They thanked the remainder of the crowd for not going to a Halloween party tonight… they figured they would bring one to us and they did. Their set ended with every single musician that played tonight on stage and they went out with a bang! I don’t think we have been to a Spokane show in a while where every single band was that talented. It was such a great show and we walked home with a new 45, new EP, and a new poster! Loved it!

Mark Ward, The Pica Beats, and Mon Cheri at the Empyrean Coffee House on Friday, October 8th

I just truly love Mark Ward. The music is just a waltz through acoustic guitar riffs, occasionally a ukulele tune, and when he is by himself a kick drum. The lyrics and tone of his voice just glide through the music like a knife to butter. He is always charming live and it’s exciting to see him play. GO MARK WARD! Somehow we always manage to hear our jams to, even though lately we keep coming in halfway through his set. It’s meant to be that we hear Mark play, guiding us through the dark with a sparkle of his music.

Seattle’s The Pica Beats took the stage next and it is pronounced “pie-ka” just in case you were wondering. This band was full of she’s and him’s with two ladies and two gents. One gent on bass guitar who just joined the band a week ago, the other on guitar and vocals; a lady on drums, and a lady on percussion and vocals… she’s and him’s. It was a nice little mix of tunes, they keep a simple beat that will have your feet taping but still hold your attention. It was cool to see them and it was crazy to hear that this was their first time to Spokane because we are only four hours away. I hope they continue to travel along the road of music and that they someday come back to Spokane.

We hadn’t seen Mon Cheri in a while; it’s always fun to catch up with this saucy foursome. Tonight was kind of a shock because we really only knew a few songs from their set. I say shock because we own all of their albums/eps and listen to them enough to know their tunes. Do you know what this means…new music! The group took it up a notch tonight and we loved it, Brandon wailed away on the drums, Caroline was dancing all over the stage, Kurt killed it with the bass he had, and Patrick just brought it all together. They were having fun on stage and playing new tunes, including a song called “Back Slide.” It was just a nice way to end the evening with a talented bang. Even though it was a shorter set they reeled us in like they always do and we enjoyed every second of it. Be ready for new music from Spokane’s charismatic Mon Cheri.

The Head and the Heart on Thursday, September 16th at the Empyrean

After work we ran to grab a bite to eat and rushed to the Empyrean to see Seattle’s blooming whimsical folk band The Head and the Heart. It was a matter of seconds before we were swept off our feet by their potent trio harmonies and elegant time changes. They asked for us to stand and kept us on our feet and moving most of the night. I was impressed with their energy and passion. Even during their more delicate songs the band was still hopping, swaying, and clapping. It was simply gorgeous and smooth for a six piece. The violin adds the best heartwarming touch.

A major highlight of the night for me was being able to sing a long to “Sounds Like Hallelujah.” Matt had put that song on a CD for me and I have been singing along to it every week! To hear it live was a treat! They also played a new tune for us, which was pretty awesome I must say. I also enjoyed my first cup of Hot Coco for the season… it was scrumptious and made with real chocolate! I know there will be many more of those to come.

For being such a cold rainy night in Spokane, The Head and the Heart had no problem warming the room up and capturing our ears and attention. For the last few songs three of the band members snuck on to the floor and played face to face with the crowd. They ended the evening with “Rivers and Roads,” where at the very end of the song everyone dropped the music and yelled the chorus while jumping around; they know how to go out with a bang! I can’t wait to see them again and I just saw them last night! Looks like we have another Seattle Gem we can’t get enough of!

Enola Gay, David Plell, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside at the Empyrean on Saturday, July 17th

Enola Gay, I don’t know much about these four youthful creative spirits. We caught the end of their set and what got my attention was a) two pink/orange balloons, b) “to infinite” cardboard wings, c) barefoot drummer, d) unique sound. Also they are the first band I have seen use the lights at the Empyrean for effect. I am very intrigued with them. Quirky singing, chanting, and tempos that all worked together. I also enjoyed how the bass player put a mac apple sticker on his bass. I want to see them again, it was out there and cool. Hint of Space Opera 77 love going on there… who knows. Guess i’ll just have to see them again.

I love David, he is just the friendliest nicest uubbbeerr talented kid who up and went to Japan and tonight just happens to be his first show since he has been back. I would love to get inside of his head for an hour and just take notes. On stage with David was not a full band but an acoustic guitar and two gentlemen eating an Italian Dinner (spaghetti, French bread, and all). It wasn’t super distracting but more or less made me (for some odd reason) want to drop the city of Paris behind them. Yep. I don’t know, never even been to Paris but it seemed fitting. I enjoy the lyrics of David’s music too, one line that I had to share, it’s not exact but along the lines of …when the end is near I want to have a beard to show how wise and far I’ve traveled. I am not a man and I want a beard now. If you haven’t seen David live before, you will be shocked at how much his face changes and mouth moves when he sings. He’ll also give you a new take on playing an acoustic guitar fast. It was great to hear his irreplaceable voice again. I look forward to a few more shows from him before the summer is over.

I couldn’t take notes during Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside. I just wanted to dance. But I couldn’t do it until other people danced and it’s this big stupid rule I have because I am a chicken. None the less thanks to one of my best friends Rhiannon I was able to dance to a few songs. I adore Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside so much; I wish they were from Spokane so we could see them more. Sallie’s vocals just put me in a 60’s mind set and I love the stand up bass. They are a very tight band and music for all age’s ears. It’s great to sit back and listen to and even better to dance too. Everyone kept saying how they are the number one band in Portland. If you haven’t seen Sallie yet, you have no excuse because it’s her third time in town… but just in case look her up on myspace! Gezzz.

P.S. – Whoever had the CIOM Sticker on their guitar case, yeah you totally made my night!

Olive Green Anna and the Globes on Saturday, July 3rd at the Empyrean

The charming Olive Green Anna is turning a page and moving too Germany after her wedding in Thailand; tonight was her final show. Any time I have ever conversed words with Anna she is a sweet as could be and we wish her the best!

The evening started with Power Und Beauty which included Anna, Karli, and Caroline. They were missing the fourth beauty from the group but they still had a fun time on stage and sounded soft and chirpy like a bundle of bluebirds. Anna said Power Und Beauty was her favorite band she has ever been in. Between the three ladies there were harmonies, an accordion, maraca, tambourine, clapping, smiles, and the word sister in every song. You could see the friendship on stage and hear it in the music. If you missed the show or are unfamiliar with Power Und Beauty you can download their EP “The Gnome” for free online here.

Olive Green Anna played a few of her songs as she wore her patriotic American flag shoes that she won’t be taking with her; because well that is just not polite in Germany or Thailand. Her folk tunes warmed up the Empyrean and even Zac Fairbanks joined in for a few songs. It was cool to hear her sing her songs with Karli and Caroline on stage as well. Very excited to listen to her EP she handed out! Farewell and we wish you the Best!

It was great to see some familiar faces, therefore I was so busy chatting all the sudden I was thinking wow this is a cool CD and um it was the Globes actually playing. They sounded so clear and polished. I had to take a step back and scope out how everyone was very zoned into the band watching them with their arms crossed. Enthralled with their experimental indie rock. It’s also interesting to us how the singer doesn’t stand in the center but stands off to the side of the stage; it kind of throws you off a bit when you are so used to looking straight ahead. Their music and live show just gets better every time we see them. If you have never seen The Globes live it is a must see. Tonight was their kick off night before they hit the open road on tour with Maps and Atlases.

My final thought on tonight… why did some many people look like Ben Jorgens?! I mean really it was weird. I bet they all don’t ride that crazy bike like he does though.

Brett Hite CD Release Show on Tuesday, May 18th at the Empyrean Coffee House

Matt and I walked in to a very packed Empyrean for a Tuesday night in Spokane. The place was full of fashion forward kids, family, and music fans. I hope Brett Hite has a brother because if not his twin was there. Brett mentioned that it was a dream come true to see everyone there, very thankful.

Brett Hite’s album “Visible” came out today and when you pop it into your CD player or check out his tunes on Myspace you here more than just vocals and an acoustic guitar. However when he played tonight he captured an entire room with his acoustic guitar and drummer. It is rare to have a room that full be silent; Brett did it. I think the breaking point for the silence was when he started to talk about his friend Shayla. Shayla passed away to a battle with bone cancer and Brett asked her what she wanted to tell the world. After a few days she responded with “Gods got my back.” Brett wrote a song called “Sing Me to Sleep” for Shayla, you could hear a needle drop in the room when he sang it tonight.

That was actually how we knew about Brett. He has come to the KIX 96 Radiothon for CMN and has played this song live and talked about Shayla. Matt met him there; we think that is so cool for him to take the time to support CMN, and share his story about Shayla. Very touching and genuine person. On a lighter note Brett has perfect pop vocals and can write beautiful lyrics. His new album Visible has ten tracks all written by Brett himself. I can’t decided if “I Don’t Wanna” or “Make You Mine” is my favorite so I guess it will have to be a tie. He is fun to see live too not only because it is acoustic but he tells a lot of stories in between the songs and they make the concert so much more personal.

Outside of playing his original tunes he also managed to mix in “Replay” by Iyaz. It seems like Brett has a wide taste of music, which is always a good thing. His acoustic pop songs are perfect for a music fan of all ages. He kind of reminds me of a Jason Mraz meets Mat Kearney, which is a great thing because I love both of those artists! I am so glad we were able to catch his show and here more of Brett’s music! I have the CD right next to me and I am looking forward to indulging into it a bit further! Thank you Brett for all you do, congratulations on your new album!
