0 Volume: The Inlander’s Local Music Extravaganza 2011

Volume: The Inlander’s Local Music Extravaganza 2011 on Thursday, May 26th at the Knitting Factory

Volume 2011 featured the Inlander’s five Bands to Watch: Horse Thieves, Silver Treason, Whiskey Dick Mountain, Ocean and K. Clifton (also known as Quiz).

I had the pleasure of being on the Inlander’s Bands to Watch committee this year, and I am so thankful I was able to be a part of this project again. The group of people that Leah Sottile put together was super diverse and a great bunch of people who are involved in the local music scene. The best part of being in the group is hearing about other people’s favorite bands and bands they are so excited about in Spokane. For example I was unfamiliar with Ocean, I had only seen him once before but had no idea that he was such a talented artist and producer. Watching him up on stage last night was incredible; he can create some really killer tunes. I am so stoked I had the chance to see him live in concert by himself and I hope to see him again very soon.

I have seen Horse Thieves, Silver Treason, Whiskey Dick Mountain, and K. Clifton plenty of times before and each time I seem them, I’m still awestruck by the amount of talent they have. Seriously the list of bands we had in the committee was inspiring; to know that, that many bands, artists, and dj’s are doing great things in the Spokane music scene.

Horse Thieves brought their eclectic warm folk to the big stage at the Knitting Factory, which was cool because normally we see them packed into small venues. Since they are still new to the Spokane music scene it’s exciting to hear their music live. I am not at the point yet where I can sing along, which is a little sad, however I will get there! I am always stunned by Marshall’s vocals, he has such a unique voice it captures my attention each time. Plus tonight was the first time I have seen Horses Thieves with their drummer and I loved the added texture to their music.

It was pretty cool to finally see Whiskey Dick Mountain get recognized! They have done so many shows these past months, put out a new album, and even released it on this Smokey Purple Swirl Vinyl! Not many local bands are releasing music on colored vinyl! With their Last Supper Whiskey Dick Mountain Picture on Stage, everyone in the crowd was rocking out.

I even saw a dinosaur getting down and singing at the top of it’s lungs during their set! The coolest part of their set for me was hearing people say things like “… I can’t believe I haven’t seen these guys before…” or “… I can’t wait to see them again!” If you missed the Inlander Volume show you can catch Whiskey Dick Mountain at ElkFest next weekend!

Silver Treason also killed it tonight. I love how they added big Christmas lights to Kevin’s microphone stand and I LOVED Kevin’s jacket! He always has the coolest shirts and such. This is another band where I was so excited to see them get recognized! They are a hard working, fun, country rock band that is perfect for dancing too! Plus one of my highlights of the night was getting to hear them do an alt-country version of “Living After Midnight” by Judas Priest; they were complete rockstars. I love their energy and will take every chance I can get to see this band live!

First of all, I have to say how PERFECT the Inlander’s photo of K. Clifton was; the one on the school bus with the kids… that photo is seriously one of the coolest band shots I have seen. It’s hard for me to call Quiz K.

Clifton, because I am so used to Quiz however name aside he killed it as he always does. He has such a way with words and it’s pretty mesmerizing to stand there and listen to him rap. He has been an artist for quite a few years and is very active in the music scene and with Bad Penmanship. I am glad he was chosen this year because Spokane needs to know that we also have an active hip-hop scene as well.

There was a steady group of people at the show tonight and it was cool to see the diverse group that attended. To get the night rolling Pasties and Paddles Spokane’s “Punk Rock Burlesque Group” sang a few songs, did a little dancing, and the PJAMMERS Marching Band joined them on stage. It was pretty much one of the sexiest, grandest, show openings I have ever seen! Pasties and Paddles continued to do dance sets in-between band set changes and they were hot. Those girls are so talented and confident. Plus they made a huge bang with some confetti, that was cool! Also we got to see Tangled Roots which is an elite dance group! They also got to perform dance routines in between set changes and they had everyone from adults, teens, to the CUTEST little tikes ever! It was so cool to watch them perform and everyone in the crowd was digging it. I would love to see this group at more shows!

Overall I look forward to Volume: The Inlander’s Local Music Extravaganza every year because it showcases local talent and brings in so much more. They did a great job talking about the bands in the issue and recording videos on their website. Leah YOU ROCK, you did such a great job putting on the event; it’s a lot of work and we think it turned out perfectly. I can’t wait for what the scene will bring in 2012.

3 March Fourth Marching Band

March Fourth Marching Band at the Knitting Factory on Thursday, February 24th

March Fourth Marching Band was one of the coolest musical and visual things I have experienced in Spokane. They are a huge band, I think I counted around 13 people on stage with instruments and then they had beauties which consisted of dancers and stilts! As soon as the music started there were three people on stilts that walked right out into the crowd. I turned around and saw knees in my eyes, it was so wild! On the stilts tonight was Aaron Lyon, Sid Phillips, and the lovely Scarlett Rose! Without any problems they were kicking and dancing and doing acrobatic lifts and flips right before our eyes, as you heard March Fourth creating the beats with their movements! I felt like it was the Punk Rock Cirque Du Soleil!

Solely speaking music, wow… after watching them perform I am kind of pissed I was in orchestra verses marching band. On stage there was a killer horn section with a saxophone, trombone, and even trumpet! The percussion featured bongos, snare, bass tom, toms, cymbals, and bass drum! We even got a little flute action and of course there was an electric bass guitar. The rhythm was incredible, watching them perform together. Every time Katie Presley had a solo, all I could say was “damn.” That was another cool thing about the band; everyone had their moment to shine. They featured each instrument, worked well together and played off each other smoothly. Not to mention they looked hot doing it! Everyone had their custom outfits on, there was sunglasses, hats, glitter, makeup, fishnets, “March Fourth” garter belts, horns, vests, Mother Mary pants, and so much more! Like I said, hot!

All while the music was going on, some of the beauties came in the crowd and danced! At one point Scarlett bumped right up next to me in the front row and got us to shake our hips. The energy in the room was great, from the band to the audience everyone was letting loose and having a good time. Two other wonderful things with the beauties; one Ms. Amy Hatfield can hula hoop, two bet you haven’t seen a sultry chair dance on stilts?! I almost don’t want to tell you, the reader, every single wonderful detail about tonight because you should have been there!!!!

I know it was cold out, blizzard Spokane in the single digits and it was hard for me to leave the warm house but once I arrived it was more than worth it! I wish the Knitting Factory was full because I can guarantee you every single person in the Knitt tonight was having fun. Seeing March Fourth Marching Band live is one thing that I will never forget and I am forever a fan now. The wow factor musically is a 10 and the beauties are a 10 as well, together just so musically delicious!

Two things for you: CLICK HERE to check out their website to learn more and next time they are in town;  Be There.

1 Fences, Cheap Girls, and Against Me!

Fences, Cheap Girls, and Against Me! at the Knitting Factory on Saturday, February 5th

Ever since seeing Fences play at Bumbershoot last summer their tunes have been non-stop in the house. We enjoy the style of every song and some of the tunes are perfect pop jams. It’s punk rock yet still classy and hooks you like a bra clasp. Songs like “Girls with Accents” and “Sadie” float through my ear buds and stay inside my mind for hours. It was so cool to have Fences come to Spokane and be on the Against Me! tour! I was a little nervous about how a rowdy punk rock crowd would react to the more laidback style of Fences but people were really cool. I even saw a few kids singing along to “Girls with Accents.” On top of being super excited Fences was in Spokane, they sounded fucking perfect on stage! I hope I see more and more of their name on show flyers and concert calendars. During the final song Chris simple said thank you and put down his guitar and walked off the stage while the band continued to play. If you live in Seattle you have no excuse for not seeing this band, but to help you and point you in the right direction check out their website here.

I hadn’t heard of or seen Cheap Girls until tonight. This tight little three piece from Michigan kept the songs rolling and managed to kick the shit out of their opening set. Simple, fun alternative rock; pop hooks and fast paced. It was song after song as kids were bopping their heads in the crowd; I even caught myself rocking back and forth. They didn’t chat much and kept it easy going, by the looks of the floor kids were digging it. I loved the cherry red drum set and the laid back attitude. I could definitely see myself listening to them this summer. Learn more about Cheap Girls for yourself here, hopefully we get the chance to catch them again in concert!

This would be my second time seeing Against Me! and I think Matt has seen them quite a few times, maybe like 10 or more; regardless we were stoked to see them concert again (obviously since we went to the show)! With our beers in hand we sang along to a lot of the songs Against Me! treated the crowd with! It was cool to hear the bar sing along with us to “From Her Lips to God’s Ears,” “Don’t Lose Touch,” “White People for Peace,” “I Was A Teenage Anarchist,” “The Ocean,” “T.S.R.,” “Thrash Unreal,” “Miami,” “Sink Florida Sink,” and many many more! I would also like to add that I wasn’t the only one singing, kids in the crowd knew the new and the old songs and were right there with me singing along! Even Tom the singer thanked the crowd for singing along. Also props (yes I said props) to the band for allowing this kid to stand on stage for a second and not just push him off. So, what happened was there was no secutiry by the stairs to get on stage so a kid totally ran on stage and stood there for a second, while the band continued a song, then he proceed to

stagedive – it was beautiful! HOWEVER, security still didn’t learn the lesson because it happened again this time with a girl but she just took a photo and got kicked out, no stage dive – lame! I mean really if you are going to risk getting on stage at a punk rock show you should really stage dive!

Against Me! continually puts on a killer show with high energy and they really just kick you in the ass. I also can’t get over the vocals Tom has, he can sing so damn well! In fact when they left the stage the crowd was chanting to play more play more! I could listen to them all night long… maybe that’s why we never miss their show when they are in town! Also in case you haven’t heard Against Me! will be playing at Sasquatch! Music Festival this year! Looks like we will get to rock out and sing along to this band again very soon!

Plain White T’s Soundcheck Party on Friday, February 4th at the Knitting Factory

First of all I haven’t seen a cooler backdrop/setting for a concert in a few months! The Plain White T’s had this wonderful vintage circus theme going on with white and red stripes and big white light up letters along with ropes and almost a hint of nautical theme as well. They made the album artwork of “Wonders of the Younger” to life; it was simple but also extremely awesome! Plus to add a cherry to the top, some of their guitars were painted to match the background like Dave’s guitar had an anchor on it and Tom’s acoustic guitar was red and white striped, Tim had a guitar with “Wonder” on it and even De’ Mar’s drum set had rope around it and a compass. All the little details really made it cool.

The funness about a sound check party is that you get to see the band work together on stage to get their sound plus you get to talk to them for a minute! During their sound check they treated the very small group of us too “Irrational Anthem,” “Rhythm of Love,” and “Boomerang.” Which all three songs are off their new album! The funniest part about the guys was Mike their bass player, we learned he loves bass guitars. He has to buy them all the time and right now there are a bunch stored in their tour bus. Girls have shoe obsessions and Mike has bass guitar obsessions. The band was really nice and I now have “Irrational Anthem” stuck in my head!

I heard later in the night Tom even got into the crowd and sang a song from the front of the bar! I am sure everyone at the show had such a killer time, I wish I could have stayed for it!

Thursday and Underoath at the Knitting Factory on Thursday, February 3rd

It’s crazy to think that “Full Collapse” has been around for 10 years and we were in for a treat tonight as Thursday played the album in its entirety! From the kids in the front row who knew every word of every song to the crowd in the bar, the entire house was digging their set. However the dedicated fans in the front row were fun to watch because they were singing along at the top of their lungs and they would even applaud the band when they played their jam! Thursday dedicated “A Hole in the Wall” to the band Animals as Leaders (who unfortunately we missed) saying they were great guys to share the road with! The band also dedicated “Paris In Flames” to the fans that have stuck with them for ten years. They were dedicating songs to everyone, even for Underoath! They were very thankful to be out on the road and to have the support over the years.

Like I mentioned above too they sounded great! It was so much fun to hear some of my Thursday jams like “Understanding in A Car Crash” and “Cross Out Eyes.” Thursday also managed to thank us for not being a farty crowd after the frontman Geoff explained how crowds either smell like weed smoke or farts. On top of “Full Collapse” they treated us with a new song called “Turnpike Divides” which will be on their new album “No Devolucion” that comes out of April 12th. It was a treat to be able to see Thursday live in concert; we can’t wait for their new album to come out!

If you want to talk about a band that can kick the crap out of your ear buds, let’s talk Underoath. This is my third time seeing Underoath and each time I am blown away by the bands energy and stage presence. They are powerful and are great at taking over the crowd. It’s crazy that the band has released 7 albums with their latest album being “Ø (Disambiguation)” which came out November of 2010. I am pretty sure most of the crowd was familiar with every single album because it looked like all of the kids were singing along to every song. Plus as soon as their set started the bar cleared out and people were ready to rock out on the floor. Their fans were the most loyal floor crowd I have seen in a long time.

Underoath played “In Division” which is a new song of theirs and they were excited about the new music video! I was really excited to watch the video when we got home and it is was really cool, I don’t want to ruin it but they film a lot of it underwater! Click here to watch it for yourself! Underoath had a cool set visually with a video screen and these horizontal light bars; which really made their silhouettes stand out. They have so much energy on stage and Spencer’s dreadlocks were never still. The entire band works it and they put on a great live show. They keep me coming back every time they are in town! It’s pretty wild to think they started in 1997, I look forward to seeing them in concert yet again!

2 Grace Potter & the Nocturnals and Chamberlin

Chamberlin and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals at the Knitting Factory on Wednesday, January 26th

I have never felt more like a bear coming out of hibernation then last night. The Empyrean Farewell Parties aside, tonight was the first night I have been out to a big loud rockin concert since November. I was awakened! It was exciting to meet new people and see friends I hadn’t seen in a while. I had missed seeing some familiar faces at concerts and tonight was a perfect night to shake hips with friends!

Chamberlin opened the show tonight as a five piece band of gorgeous instruments and men they got the attention of the audience and sounded lovely. It is so funny because they looked like they came right out of the great Northwest but they are actually from Vermont! With beards and flannel they fit right in! I did a little research before we went to the show and checked out their MySpace! I instantly fell in love with the song “Dust” which I am SO glad they played tonight! I think I have a new band to listen and follow. They had a really “full” sound live, and according to their MySpace they consider themselves “Folk Rock.” Which! By the way I adore. They are rockin yet they are folky, I am kind of embarrassed I didn’t think about putting those two categories together before.

Chamberlin also played for us songs off their new album “Bitter Blood” which comes out March 1st, however they had it for sale tonight at the show! I think it is so cool when bands are able to do that, you feel extra special for having the album before it’s “out.” They played the title track off their new album “Bitter Blood” and it was so awesome because they had duel guitar solos and Scott from Grace Potter and the Nocturnals even came out on stage and played guitar on the song. Chamberlin just kicked ass and rocked it! It was a little funny when the light guy turned the lights on to the crowd for the band to see, I think he was surprised by the size because he said something along the lines of “…speechless.” I am stoked to learn more about this band and hopefully get the opportunity to see them again! Check out Chamberlin HERE.

One extra special note about tonight, HUGE KUDOS to the sound guy. For like the first time ever, they turned up the volume and played some wonderful guilty pleasure songs during the set change between Chamberlin and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals! Instead of just waiting like, bored out of your mind they played songs like “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie, “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, “Whip It” by Devo, and even “Super Freak” by Rick James! They were songs everyone knew and people were singing the lyrics at the top of their lungs, dancing… it made the set change a blast! Why can’t everyone do this at shows… hint hint.

Let’s talk LEGS! Holly Cow… did Miss Potter have some incredible long legs and long blonde hair; add in her pipes of gold and you have a bombshell! Grace Potter and the Nocturnals nailed it tonight, packing in every rockin song and even a few mellow tunes. I was blown away! The set was loud, fun, and full of dancing! I still almost 24hours later can not get over Grace’s vocals! This lady can sing like nobody’s business, I am not joking when I say “Pipes of Gold!” She was able to funk it up, get high, get low, and keep it smooth. She is my generations Janis Joplin or Tina Turner!

Along with Grace’s vocals the band was topnotch. The entire band and Grace had splendid chemistry! They looked like they were having a blast on stage, which really makes the world of difference. In fact it was Benny, one of the guitar players Birthday tonight! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BENNY! In case you noticed I said “one,” that’s because the band has two guitar players, drums, and a lady named Cat on bass guitar! Grace rocks the acoustic guitar, electric guitar, tambourine, and of course her one and only keys! Speaking of instruments, Benny also rocks an 18, YES 18, string guitar, it is a double stacker! I have never seen a guitar like that before in concert, I lit up like a kid and ran over to the other side of the stage just to peak at it. So stinking cool!

Something that stuck with me about Grace Potter and the Nocturnals was that Grace said “… so many of you, thank you so much… pretty cool to come to a town you have never been to and feel like your home.”  She also said this that sums up the night perfectly “… a lot of you were dragged here by a friend, and you have no fucking idea who we are… BUT YOU DO NOW!” No matter where you looked from every corner to upstairs to the bar to the VIP everyone was dancing and having a great time. Now I didn’t know much about Grace Potter and the Nocturnals before this show, so most of the songs were new to me. However I will tell you this, I am definitely looking forward to checking out her albums. I DO KNOW WHO SHE IS NOW! I will be talking about this concert for quite some time! If Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are coming to your town, DON’T miss the show!

Cary Brothers & Sara Bareilles at the Knitting Factory on Saturday, November 20th

First name Cary. Second name Brothers. “Just Me…these guys are not my brothers…” as he pointed to his band. It’s not the Cary Brothers it’s Cary Brothers. I think I have always added the “the” before his name so I am glad that was clarified. It was cool to see Cary Brothers since so many of his songs have been used in TV shows and movies. I would like to thank Zach Braff for first introducing me to Cary Brothers with his song “Ride.” It’s a gorgeous song and I was very excited I got to hear it live tonight. Cary had a few funny stories for us tonight and one of them particular stuck with me. It has to do with his song “Blue Eyes” in which a girl wrote to him how she wanted to walk down the aisle to the song but she thought it was naughty because it said “…sweet to my meat…” but it really says “…sweet to my mean.” Pretty funny stuff! Cary also treated us to the title track off his new album called “Under Control.” I thought he sounded great live and he played the guitar and the piano and sang with his band. I got to hear the two songs I wanted too and many more. Great live set!

Sara Bareilles took the stage next. It appeared as she had a sparkly deep blue/purple piano, could have been the lighting but I am almost 99% sure that it wasn’t. However she glowed on stage with an ear to ear grin and a tie along with a glittering skirt! Sara didn’t mess around and opened with “Vegas,” and there were two cool things about this. First of all she added “… move to Spokane…” in a line of the song instead of Vegas, which the crowd loved. Also she never stopped playing the piano from “Vegas” into “Uncharted.”

Then! Sara played “Gonna Get Over You” which is my second favorite song off her new album Kaleidoscope Heart (Kaleidoscope Heart being my fav song). It was so great and I love that it is the third song off her album and the third song she played tonight. She had Holly Conlan who opened before Cary Brothers come on stage and sing/play on “Gonna Get Over You.” It was cool to look around the room the entire night and see all these girls and ladies singing along to every word and dancing with their girlfriends. During “Love Song” when the crowd sang back it actually sounded really good! There was a lot of singing along all night, and even when Sara didn’t ask us too.

Oh my gosh I can’t believe I haven’t said this yet either, she totally stands up and rocks the piano. Complete badass! Sara even cheered us tonight because she said there have been a lot of great shows on the tour and some well… yeah. She said we set the bar really high and that we were a breath of fresh air. Cheers to Spokane for supporting live music. She was super nice, and thanked everyone again for coming; even her crew who is the first to rise and the last to go to bed, and as she said, they carry her heavy shit upstairs.

Sara played a lot of songs off her new album for us. She was talking how some of the songs are a bit darker on Kaleidoscope Heart and how she had a challenge writing some of the songs. She did bring a little laughter into the subject by saying how the nice thing about writing the depressing songs was how she got to see how depressed some of her fans were. However the album is phenomenal. The lyrics and powerful and full of emotion, the piano is grand, and the production wraps it up like a brown paper package with string. It’s one of my favorite albums of the year.

Sara Bareilles brought out Holly Conlan and Cary Brothers out on stage a few times as well throughout the night. I guess they are close friends and good drinking buddies so it was cool to see all the bands out on stage at once. See their chemistry. You could also read on Sara’s face how she was just into playing her music and having fun. Then to top it off Sara covered “(Nice Dream)” by Radiohead which was jaw dropping! I love Radiohead, probably my favorite band and whenever someone covers one of their songs (which is hard to do) it’s pretty much the best. She killed it!

We also got to hear “King of Anything” which was fun to sing along to as well. Sara Bareilles is super talented on so many levels. She is a complete sweetheart too! I had a wonderful night and I could tell the packed house did as well. I hope she comes back again in the next year or so, I won’t miss it!

0 Little Big Town

Little Big Town on Wednesday, November 17th at the Knitting Factory

Within a year I have grown to love this band and they are definitely one of my top favorite country bands now and forever. There are so many cool aspects to Little Big Town, there is nothing little about them. Four lead singers, strong clear vocals, sass, personality and a passion for their music. They are bold and can harmonize like nobody’s business. This applies to their albums and seeing them live. Except when you see them live you can see the bands chemistry and see how much fun they have doing this, making music that is. They are a tight group almost like family; you can read it on their faces.

This is their second time at the Spokane Knitting Factory this year and their third time in Spokane this year; they also played here with Keith Urban at the Spokane Arena. Every time I see them, there is always a huge crowd, and a big fan following. You also have to add in the factor that they can all sing beautifully but they are also great songwriters.

I am in love with their new album “The Reason Why” it is so strong and a killer country album. I couldn’t wait to hear the songs live and sing along to some of the songs I adore off “The Reason Why” like “Why, Oh Why,” “The Reason Why,” “You Can’t Have Everything,” “Little White Church,” and more! I also enjoyed hearing a few other songs that I love, love, love by Little Big Town including “Fine Line,” “Bones,” “A Little More You,” and “Boondocks.”

Everyone was having a great time, clapping along to the songs. I swear the whole night the entire band was smiling and even Kimberly was shaking hands of the people in the front row during the songs.  It was visually cool to see seven people on stage and also a row of microphones. They actually had six in a row so the two other gentlemen that play instruments outside of the four could also come up and sing. There isn’t any other band in the country scene like Little Big Town. I would even say currently in any mainstream scene, they pretty much kick some serious Wrangler Ass. I even got down and did some dancing in my cowboy boots with my friend Jenny! The night was grand, like the past two were the last time they were in town. If you haven’t seen them yet I don’t know what you are waiting for because you are missing out!

Ghostland Observatory at the Knitting Factory on Tuesday, November 16th

After experiencing what we did last night, I would say that Spokane NEEDED a Ghostland Observatory fix. It was an out of control, let’s get down, splendid night.

This was my first time at a Ghostland Observatory show and I wasn’t expecting the light shower that we got, the size of the crowd, or the energy. The house was packed and wherever you looked, any direction, someone was shaking their ass. Kids even managed to bring in hula hoops. Which by the way this is my third run in with hula hoops in a week, is this a new fad at shows? Anyhow the energy in the room was as high as a kite and everyone was looking to let loose on a Tuesday night. In regards to the light shower laser show our eyes and minds witnessed… well that was something magically delicious.

For example, Trans-Siberian Orchestra was in town on Sunday and they use lasers, enough to make you go oohh and whooaa. Ghostland takes it up a notch, okay maybe ten notches and blows you out of the water with hundreds of lasers and fog machines. Yes the lights danced with the songs as well. It is such a stunning live show. EVEN the security guys in the front row, which by the way never smile (at any venue) but stand there with crossed arms, were like oh my god jaw dropped. From the floor it looked amazing; from up top it looked like a spider web of lights. Everyone at the show was light fucked as PK from Platform Booking would say.

This is a band that you HAVE to see live at least once. Add these two to your bucket list boys and girls. I can’t believe it has taken me this long to see them. I did miss them at Sasquatch but I am sure outdoors is a bit different compared to an indoor venue. After last night I do know that I will never miss one of their shows ever again. EVER!

This dangerously sizzling duo treated our ear buds to a lot of songs off their new album “Codename: Rondo” which came out on October 25th. It was wonderful to hear songs like “Glitter,” “Give Me the Beat,” “Codename: Rondo,” “That’s Right,” and “Freeze” live!

I also do adore Turner’s cape. He is such a badass mixing and controlling the beats and he also had a drum kit he play as well. Behren’s vocals are so unique and a slap in the face grand. Plus HE IS ONE HELL OF A DANCER; limber, quick, on his toes, looking like a complete rock star. Oh and did I mention he kills it on the guitar. So let’s add this up two badass dudes mixing electro, punk, funk, rock, pop into tunes to shake your ass too, a stellar laser light show, sassy sexy dance moves, and tons of energy on stage: equals Ghostland Observatory. Uh Huh!

Keller Williams at the Knitting Factory on Friday, November 12th

First of all it was so awesome to see Keller Williams play a song as the Super Musical Guest at Yo Gabba Gabba LIVE! There’s A Party In Your Town this afternoon. I knew the adults were zoned in as he looped instrument after instrument and the kids were all about the Hula Hoop lyrics. Plus there were a lot of oohhs and awhhhs when he had a light up hula hoop!

All the kids were tucked in bed this evening for tonight was for the grown-up’s. It was hilarious when we walked in to the venue before the show started because the bar was so stuffed full and there was two people on the floor, with X’s on their hands. I was a little nervous because the bar is so far away from the stage that it could be really awkward to play on stage like that. However the second people saw the lights dim and you heard the strumming of a guitar, the crowd flocked to the floor and started instantly dancing. Some girls even brought hula hoops!

Keller’s intro was really cool because he started playing behind stage with a wireless acoustic guitar and then as he was walking out on stage he was still playing it and he went right into his first song. He also sang his hello to us, he sang “Good evening everybody, hello, welcome to the show it’s Friday night…” I love when people sing their hellos! I was excited to see if he was barefoot and sure enough he was which I think is so cool. His toes danced across a huge area rug and across many pedals and buttons.  The stage set up was really neat as well. It was Keller in the middle of a musical circle including an electric bass guitar, electric guitar, and a few other goodies. Yet the acoustic guitar never really came off from around his neck. His two other guitars were on stands so he could just swing the acoustic guitar around his back and step in front of the other guitar. He never stopped moving, he was from one instrument to the next and singing in-between it all. He is the one man band! But even better is that I would say he is the One Man Jam Band! He packs a lot of sound for one guy!

All of his songs never really ended they just flowed from one to the next like a downhill stream in the forest. The crowd was loving even beat of every song. As the night went on more and more people were dancing, people were having a great time. I was extremely impressed with his music and his ability to loop live like he did, it leaves little room for mistakes. Plus it is great to see a song being built right in front of your eyes.

Whether it’s for Kids or Adults, Keller Williams is a top notch musician and his music lights up the room. I am glad I had the opportunity to see him light up two different shows today and I can’t wait to listen to “Kids” with my younger cousin!
