0 The Jill and Julia Show

The Jill and Julia Show at the Bing Crosby Theater on Friday, March 11th

As we arrived at the cozy and friendly Bing Crosby Theater, familiar faces were surrounding us as laughter and conversation filled the house. Tonight I was also introduced to Bing Bars for the first time! They are milk or dark chocolate bars for $4 and the proceeds benefit the Advocates for the Bing Cosby Theater! I enjoyed half of mine during the show, it was scrumptious! There was quite the buzz surrounding Julia Sweeney because today was officially made Julia Sweeney Day in Spokane by our lovely Mayor Mary Verner!

To start the night off officially and properly Wayne Larson introduced three of our area Spokane News Anchors who each had something to add about Julia Sweeney. First was Robyn Nance from KXLY who said Julia is a “…very generous and giving person… she really is a gem!” After Robyn, up came Sten Walstrom from KREM saying Julia has a “…positive impact… actually funny, I think that’s rare!” Last but not least representing KHQ, Dan Kleckner who talked about his upcoming piece with Julia and his shameless (but funny) plug about 6 Questions; he also talked about how Julia was meant to be on stage and how if Pat had to use the bathroom at the Bing Crosby Theater, Pat would use the closest one! Last but not least Mayor Mary Verner came up and read to use the official proclamation! With an introduction like that Julia was glowing when she came out on stage! She more than deserves to have her own day in Spokane!

When Julia Sweeny, Jill Sobule, and David Carpenter took the stage you could hear the excitement in the room. First of all Julia looked Gorgeous and both Jill and Julia had killer shoes on! So killer, I noticed when Julia came back out for the encore her shoes were off… which I don’t blame her because those were some serious high, very hot, heels! Instantly Jill and Julia were ready to rock and roll, from there on the night flew by and before I knew it the show was over.

Work had been very hectic that week and leading up to this weekend, and sometimes when you are that stressed and or busy you forget to laugh once and a while. Tonight I couldn’t stop laughing; I was almost a little too loud for those around me, I was laughing so hard. Julia is hilarious and has these stories most people can relate too. I love that it seems like she is just talking to us like we are friends at a coffee shop. It was very natural and just side-splitting! In between every story Julia had to share with us, Jill had a song for us. Plus David Carpenter accompanied Jill by playing a stand up bass. I loved the balance between the stories and songs. Jill was super quirky and just adorable singing her songs. Some of her songs had us laughing as well!

As much as I want to sit here and retell you all of Julia stories and recap every song, I don’t want to take away the factor of going out and seeing the show. I will say a few of my favorite songs Jill performed for us were “Jet Pack of Resistance,” “Nothing to Prove,” “Cinnamon Park,” “It was a Good Life,” and “I Kissed a Girl!” Julia had a lot of great stories about her daughter Mulan and what comes with being a parent. The two stuck around at the end of the show and signed CD’s and DVD’s and said hello!

In the Jill and Julia intro/goodbye song the lyrics go “…sometimes it works…sometimes it doesn’t the Jill and Julia Show!” Well tonight it WORKED! I am so glad I had the opportunity to see this show and thank you Wayne for bringing this evening to the Bing Crosby Theater! I hope Jill and Julia get to come back again soon!

Bing Bars... yum!

April Smith and the Great Picture Show at the Bing Crosby Theater on Friday, November 26th

As the lights went down in Spokane’s adorable Bing Crosby Theater Kristen Kurtis from Spokane’s River 96.9 came out on stage with an introduction. April Smith & the Great Picture walked on stage and instantly lit up the room. April Smith looked adorable in striped nylons, green high heels (which did change to red), and a fluffy white skirt… almost like a short square dancing skirt. The four gentlemen on stage known as the Great Picture Show were dressed very sharp as well, with a vintage theme going on. They went straight into playing “Drop Dead Gorgeous” which is a track off their new album “Songs for a Sinking Ship.”

For as small and dainty as April Smith is, she has some seriously powerful, drop dead gorgeous, vocals. The entire band sure knew how to play instruments too! Throughout the night there were drums, stand up bass, keyboard, two acoustic guitars, bass guitar, electric guitars, a ukulele, accordion, violin, cajon (drum box), jingle bells, and some clapping. I also can’t forget April’s authentic vintage tambourine from the 1920’s that has to be authentic because she… bought it from eBay. She had a funny personality, the entire band did. On stage they were smiling and laughing, dancing! It is also cool that Kristen from the River has built such a nice Spokane relationship with the band. They even had Thanksgiving dinner at her house; according to April Kristen makes a mean, mean, mean berry cobbler. Even, after intermission the band brought Kristen on stage to play the one and only suitcase during “Colors.”  So you can also chalk that on the list of instruments for the night, a suitcase… love it!

Another something extra lovely I enjoy about the band is how the drummer counts in the songs, it’s a nice touch! Among the songs they played for us tonight was of course “Terrible Things,” and a cover of “You Don’t Own Me” which was featured in the NFL Commercial with Alyssa Milano. During “Stop Wondering,” she had the cutest hand motions that went along with every lyric, it was killer. April Smith also did a cover of a song that her dad wrote which I thought was cute; it’s called “High School Memory.” Family must be important for April too because she even snuck in a sweet song about her grandparents. They also did holiday tunes for us, since it was the day after Thanksgiving, including “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch,” and “Marshmallow World.”

I know the crowd had a wonderful time at the show! People were bopping their heads in their seats, even dancing at the end. There was a lot of laughter when she told stories and I know, for sure that Spokane loves April Smith & the Great Picture Show. She told us that they love our city, mountains, and trees so I hope that means they will be back soon! Until then, check April Smith & the Great Picture Show out here on their website!

P.S. – Kristen I have never met you, but I would love to try your mean berry cobbler sometime.

2 Wylie and the Wild West

Wylie and the Wild West at the Bing Crosby Theater on Saturday, October 16th

Tonight was a gorgeous fall evening in Spokane with a crisp breeze on our walk down to the Bing. We were very excited to see Wylie and the Wild West because Trucker Dave has known Wylie for a while and it was such a treat to be able to see the man behind the stories. Wylie and the Wild West is the first band I have seen where every gentleman on stage was wearing a cowboy hat, and tie. I loved it! Wylie even had a very pretty guitar strap that had his name on it in silver! There was a lot of very fancy western wear in the crowd too; I should have worn my boots!

Unfortunately cowboy poet Paul Zarzyski was unable to come to Spokane for the show tonight because he has the flu. So Wylie and the guys sent him home with bed rest and a pint of Whiskey. I hope you get better Paul! Wylie and the Wild West still played a few of Paul’s poems to music for us later in the evening, which were gorgeous.

Wylie and the Wild West treated us to around 28 songs with an encore! It was a night full of cowboy rodeo romance, cowboy waltz, lonesome ol’ cowboy lullabies, and yodeling tunes. I also can’t forget to mention the horses, a few of the songs tonight were dedicated the majestic animals.

Some of the songs we heard tonight were “When I’m Riding I’m Right,”  “Cattle Call,” “Buffalo Gals,” “Ridin’ the Hi-Line,” “Whoop Up Trail,” “Double Wild,” “True Love Travels On A Gravel Road,” “Equus Caballus,” “To Her,” “Hooked on Honkey Tonk,” “Ain’t No Life After Rodeo,” “Grace,” “Ugly Girl Blues,” “The Yodeling Fool,” “Hooves of the Horses,” and many more. Even a cover of “Everyday” by Buddy Holly which both Dave and Matt think it should have been a country song because it sounded so cool. Wylie also took a lot of requests and dedicated songs to people in the crowd tonight which was cool to see the amount of dedicated fans he has. Don’t think you have Wylie all figured out either, this cowboy likes rock n roll as well! He loves Keith Richards, and even snuck in a little “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” during one of his songs.

Ray, Scot, Rick and Wylie were tighter then the stitches on my wrangler jeans. Or as Dave said “you can set your watch buy these fellas.” Just a top notch group of cowboys who have a love for music and you can hear it. Tonight was the first time I have heard a singer yodel, I got goose bumps each time; from the more mellow yodel, to Wylie’s longest yodel, to the fast fun yodel they were all so beautiful and just such a talent! Wylie even sang his famous Yahoo, Yodel for us which was pretty darn cool too. The harmonies from the group were just perfect too, and who knew Wylie could yodel and play a mean bass guitar! I was just all ears with my jaw dropped a lot of the night.

Wylie and the Wild West warmed up the Bing tonight; they said they wanted to take the crowd on the road with them because we were so enthusiastic. The crowd was very enthusiastic; people were having such a great time, clapping and laughing. Wylie would dance around on stage and it was very hard not to want to dance. I think that was the one thing missing from the night… a dance floor! However the night was perfect. I felt right at home and just loved every single tune! Wylie and the Wild West is the real deal, this is real country!

We were very lucky to have Spokane as the third and final stop on their three day tour; I can’t stop talking about how great the evening was! Don’t be strangers Wylie and the Wild West, I have to see you again!

4 The Avett Brothers & Thao and the Get Down Stay Down

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down with The Avett Brothers at the Bing Crosby Theater on Tuesday, July 20th

“…incredibly kind and gracious Avett Brothers,” Thao and the Get Down Stay Down was thankful and happy to be in Spokane at the Bing Crosby Theater with the Avett Brothers. From the get go there was a lot of crowd participation, clapping, and snapping to their music. Thao has these feather soft vocals yet she moves like a tornado on stage. Her black hair never rested still on her shoulders. The band had a lot of energy and were having a great time. I loved how Willis, the drummer, would add the smallest percussion details to the songs. It was cool to sit up in the balcony and look down on the stage… I could notice all of those small additions. The three even managed to do a little drum solo together. From banjo to guitar Thao sounded great, plus she had a flask under the back of her dress. Lucky!

From “Paranoia In B Flat Major,” all the way until “Laundry Room” I looked over the stage in awe at the Avett Brothers. What an extraordinary evening of music. I think I will be a fan for life now. The sound was so clear and so loud, but the good kind of loud, like so loud it sends a chill down your spine.

Tonight was the first time I have seen the Avett Brothers and I get why there is the Avett Nation; they put on a brilliant, perfect, energetic show! From Seth, Scott and Bob, to Seth, Scott, Bob and Joe, to just Seth, just Scott, to Seth, Scott, Bob, Joe and their drummer – it was cool to see a little bit of each side. No matter who was on stage, when they were playing they were jumping and very into their music. You could see the passion, these guys LOVE getting up and doing this every day. I was amazed at how Joe balanced the cello 90% of the time and how Bob and Joe would lean against each other and have fun on stage. The harmonies were beautiful… and you think Metal kids can shred? The Avett Brothers were picking and plucking so fast, even Joe broke a few strings off his bow! I don’t know if words can describe the full magic of the show, it was that good.

The evening of songs included; Paranoia In B Flat Major, Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promises, January Wedding, The Fall, Die Then Grow, Distraction #74, I Killed Sally’s Lover, Tin Man, 10,000 Words, Die Die Die, Kick Drum Heart, The New Love Song, Signs, The Perfect Space, Black Blue, I Would Be Sad, Pretty Girl from Cedar Lane, Colorshow, I and Love and You, Murder in the City, and last but not least Laundry Room! It is very cool that for the first time ever “Die Then Grow” was played… something special about our Spokane show!

The Avett Brothers said “… we haven’t been here enough, we need to be here more,” and I couldn’t agree more after tonight.  A few people wondered why are they playing the Bing, in other cities they are playing to thousands and it sells out? I would like to say that the venue was perfect! I wouldn’t want to see them anywhere else. Their music and energy lit up the cozy warm Bing Crosby Theater making it such an intimate evening.  I guess it was the smallest venue of the entire tour according to their merch guy. How lucky are we?!

Tonight was defiantly one of the best concerts I have ever been to, unforgettable. The crowd’s love for the band mixed with the band’s energy was just electrifying. Plus it was great to see so many friendly faces we hadn’t seen in a while!

Also I almost forgot to mention how funny this was! The Avett Brothers were thanking Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, asking for a round of applause. They said “…we like Thao …. we’re still warming up to the Get Down Stay Down.” Of course they were joking, but it was funny.

I want to end with this, to clear it up… it’s A-vett like Corvette.

Ray Wylie Hubbard, Janet Johnson, and Blue Canoe on Saturday, July 10th at the Bing Crosby Theater

Spokane’s Blue Canoe got the evening rolling with fun songs that had the audience clapping. They played “My Mistake,” “Have Love Will Travel,” and even songs they love and have never played live like “Ring of Fire.” You could tell they loved playing music and that they were having fun on stage. At the end of their set they put smiles on everyone’s faces with “Viva Las Vegas.” We were also excited to see Blue Canoe play the bass player is Bob from local record store 4,000 Holes.

Janet Johnson took the stage next and opened with some very quick Mandolin plucking. Janet and her friend Charles played a few songs for us and their set sounded very clear. The mandolin is such a cool instrument it was fun to see someone focus on it. Janet played some of her songs like “Offspring,” “Cyberspace Man,” and “Rising River;” she also managed to sneak in a song by her favorite artist Bruce Cockburn.

Last but not least was the Texas Troubadour Mr. Ray Wylie Hubbard. As Matt said  “…he was a great story teller like Grandpa, but an even better storyteller in his lyrics.” Ray would have a story for almost every song and each one was so interesting and a lot of them very funny. He had me laughing most of the show. On stage with him was his sixteen or seventeen year old son Lucas and on percussion Rick Richards. He opened with a song about counting his blessings and one of those blessings was being at the Bing Crosby Theater in Spokane. Ray Wylie Hubbard played a lot of songs for us tonight; he played “Rabbit,” “Snake Farm,” “Without Love,” “Redneck Mother,” a little country blues with the help from his son and many many others.

We learned that if you want the commitment that Ray Wylie Hubbard has with his songwriting and music, you should never learn anything else. Or as he put it don’t go to college just in case this music thing doesn’t work out as your parents would say. He will also play your wedding (maybe) for $100 and a good meal. Ray also told us his new album cover is creepy and dark because, “you get more attention when you burn down the barn then when you take out the trash.” The Bing Crosby Theater is so beautiful he felt like he had to tell the truth and that he was glad to be here. We got to sing along a few times, it wasn’t exactly Kumbaya, however he said instead of buying his merch we should all buy a metronome and some singing lessons. Ray Wylie Hubbard is an extremely talented musician and a song writer. It was a treat to see him in Spokane in the beautiful Bing Crosby Theater.

Henry Rollins Frequent Flyer Tour on Tuesday, June 22nd at the Bing Crosby Theater

Why couldn’t of Henry Rollins been my History or World Studies teacher in High School or College? The subjects might have stuck a little better and been a hell of a lot more interesting.

We sat in the beautiful golden Bing Crosby Theater tonight to see as Henry Rollins. If you have seen Henry’s spoken word you get it; you know exactly what I mean when I say it is attention grabbing, intelligent, sexy (even for almost 50), hilarious, and shocking.

Normally at show’s I go to my pen is constantly translating my thoughts to my Mead memo pad, however tonight Henry was stuck in my mind. I could barley take notes because I was engrossed with him. I don’t think I have ever paid this much attention to someone talking; I can last about an hour and a half but, we listened to Henry for almost three hours. I listened to every word that fell off his lips.

He is so fascinating; traveling the world including places we are even afraid to talk about, his love with the constitution, his humor, and opinions. He is a “Rated G Boy Scout Samurai.” Tonight was everything from Rupaul, to Constance McMillen’s story, the Constitution of South America that was adopted in 1996, Nick calling Obama a Monkey, to spreading his DNA, to the TV show Sons of Anarchy. It was a little bit of everything and it never got boring or old. Though I was glad he gave our asses back to us at the end of the night.

I want everyone to see Henry Rollins at least once, I think he prefers that you want to see him every night including on Thanksgiving however turkey is quite delicious. If you haven’t made it to see him I think he has 250 plus shows every year so really you have no excuse. Learn more about Henry Rollins here.

Final memo as Henry said “more pizza & the Ramones… life would be better.”

The Singing Nuns “Christmas Evermore”
Thursday, 12.10.2009  Bing Crosby Theater

Celebrate the Birthday of the King with the Singing Nuns in the 14th Annual production of their “Christmas Evermore” Concert Series on Thursday, December 10th at the Bing Crosby Theater

If I counted correctly, there were 19 Nuns on stage all dressed perfectly in their wrinkle free royal blue habits. They were graciously welcoming and warmed our hearts with their music at the Bing. They opened the evening with Hodie Christus Natus Est singing as they walked down the isles with candles in their hands. The first song they sang on stage was Joy to the World and it just lit up the room with the Christmas spirit!

The program tonight was “Birthday of the King” celebrating Jesus’ Birthday which is also Christmas. A really cool vintage Baby Jesus sat in his crib in the center of the stage on the ledge for all to see. The sister’s sang songs for him and us; we even all sang Happy Birthday which was mixed in with The First Noel.

We got to hear traditional favorite songs like Ava Maria, Joy to the World, Do You Hear What I Hear, and The First Noel. Then we got to hear beautiful songs we hadn’t heard before. Plus we got to sing along to Silent Night, We Three Kings, and Hark the Herald Angels Sing!

The Kelly Irish Dancers joined the sisters for a few songs, did some solo and group dances, and they were so fascinating to watch. Very delicate taps, strong kicks and smiles. It looked sharp, and was a surprise! I would love to see these kids perform again and again; it’s just really cool to watch.

One of the funnier parts of the night was the “cup – dance” off! Where the sisters had a party game with cups and clapping and it was synchronized to create a musical beat. The sisters tried to teach the dancers but they use their feet not their hands. Therefore the sisters would do a routine with the cups then the Kelly Dancers would try to compete with a dance. It was one of the highlights!

Everyone at the show was so kind and excited, Christmas was in the room! It was a perfect show to warm up the holidays and to learn more about the Sisters of the Singing Nuns!

It was also wonderful to be in the Bing during the holidays because it was perfectly decorated with his holiday photos and memorabilia. I look forward to seeing the show again in future!

The Sisters motherhouse is in Spokane, Washington, in the east wing of a large facility that was originally built in 1917 as a Jesuit scholastic ate. There are I believe like over 600 windows that need to be fixed, therefore they are currently looking to fundraise to fix the windows in the school and throughout the motherhouse. If you want to learn more about the Singing Nuns and how you can donate click here. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa
Sunday, November 29th at The Bing Crosby Theater

Dweezil Zappa plays Zappa is proof that talent is hereditary. Dweezil Zappa and his band took to the stage @ The Bing on Sunday night and this could well rank as one of most important/ best shows I’ve ever seen.

Dweezil, the son of the late Frank Zappa has seemingly inherited his fathers immense musical talent or could quite possibly be channeling ol Frank himself. Surrounded by top flight musicians, Zappa worked his way through such gems as “Yellow Snow” “Catholic Girls” “Peaches En Regalia” and of course “Willie The Pimp”.

I was quite impressed with Dweezil as a guitar player as well. His skills can be summed up simply as “Bad Assed”.  I was rather unfamiliar with a lot of Frank Zappa’s music however, I became a fan of Frank in the 1980′s when he appeared on Capitol Hill to challenge the government wanting to censor music (AKA The PMRC, look it up).

Towards the end of the night, Dweezil was trying to find a guy who was video taping the show. He explained that normally taping is not allowed but, you can now send your footage to his website dweezilzappaworld.com for everybody to watch and discuss. Cool move on Zappas part.

This is my gripe though and it goes out to all of the douchebags that insist on shoving their Blackberry’s and iPhones on stage to take pictures. Have some class leave them in your pocket, let the band do their job.

At the end of the night it was great that Dweezil shook everyone’s hand that wanted a hand shake and singed an autograph for anyone that asked. Dweezil Zappa is a true class act.

John Tesh
The Bing Crosby Theater on Saturday, August 22nd

7 Thoughts About John Tesh In Concert

  1. First off this was one of those opportunities were you just cannot say no. When is it going to happen again where you are asked to take photos of John Tesh. The Entertainment Tonight Host, Radio DJ, PBS Concert performing, writer of the NBA on NBC Theme song John Tesh. Who would turn down that opportunity?
  2. The show started with a funny intro by his webmaster with a few jokes, tee-shirt throwing, website plugging and pranks. At this point I knew this was going to be a lot more entertaining that just your normal “new age” concert.
  3. John Tesh performed a few songs and he had an great band chalked full of pro’s.
  4. In between the songs he told a few stories about music, his radio show and his kids. When he got to the story about his daughter hip hop dancing I would have never thought I would see a Hip Hop dancer at a John Tesh show let along Tesh beat boxing while he was dancing. Up on the big screen behind the band jokes would fly as John Tesh would tell stories, and just talk to the audience. He would be talking about the structure of a song he wrote and the screen behind him would say, “John is a big music nerd”. He had the audience sing the first part of the NBA on NBC theme song for a ringtone you can download off I-Tunes and the screen would say this is a bad idea. Then after the audience failed and it sounded horrible it said “I told you so”. Just an interesting fun idea for a show!
  5. This was a show not a just concert, with audience participation, a hip hop dancing, John Tesh intelligence for your life facts this was a lot more entertaining then I could have ever imagined. When he performed the NBA on NBC Theme song “Roundball Rock” he had a kid dribble a basketball on stage and gave him an IPOD for performing a trick.
  6. I remember as a kid watching the NBA with my Dad and hearing the intro all the time. It was cool for John Tesh to tell the story of how he wrote that song. He heard they were looking for a theme song and he though of the song but did not have a tape recorder with him so he left a message on his answering machine singing the song. Who would have known that would put two of his kids through college.
  7. The show was very fun hearted and you can say what you want about John Tesh I know I was thinking that the show was going to be boring but it was not. It was entertaining with great sounding music (not necessarily the music I listen to) and I left having had a good time.

Ottmar Liebert
Monday, July 27th Bing Crosby Theater

6 Thoughts about Ottmar Liebert

1. The only thing I knew about Ottmar Liebert at the start of the year was that he was a guitar player that has come through town a few times before and that there is an autographed guitar of his hanging in the lobby of the radio station I work at.

2. Man I should have gone to his shows in years past. The concert was a blast and the stage at the Bing Crosby Theater had some of the best musicians I’ve ever seen.

3. The music is Timeless. Some of the songs are over 20 years old it reminds me of listening to some Lenord Cohen songs from the 80’s when Ottmar starts to play the electric guitar. It almost seems a little dated at first then you see the skill and talent and just get pulled in and really enjoy the songs.

4. After a long day at work I would like to thank Mr. Liebert for an amazing night out and during my walk home from the theater I felt so relaxed. The show had some of the easiest music to listen to. I just sat in awe in my seat and had a great time. It was one of the best ways to wind down after a long day.

5. Whether I was taking photos in the front row, balcony, or the back of the orchestra seating it sounded great every where in the Bing Crosby Theater. You could hear every detail of every song. Every pluck of a guitar string, every percussion instrument, the bass, everything sounded great. Kudos to the band and the sound guys for making the concert sound amazing.

6. The only complaint I would have about the entire show is when it’s over 90 degrees in Spokane man the balcony at the Bing is stuffy and hot.
