If I Had, The State of Nature, The City We Live In, Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk & Flood the Sun
Tuesday, May 19th at The Cretin Hop

Tuesday night started out with a local band known as If I Had. Three kids including a female singer! There were two things that stroke me like a bolt of lighting about this band. Number one the male front-man had a super cool triangle white polka dot mess of a guitar, jealous? I am. Number two the male front-man was dancing and had a load of expressions on his face. He looked like he was there to perform and there to have a good time.

I will say this kindly but the chick-a-dee in the band needs a bit more of a personality. I only say this because the guy is off the wall in a low-key way. It seemed awkward to watch them at the same time. However If I Had’s female front-lady had some kickin’ vocals and cute shoes. Plus she could scream – watch out! At first If I Had was rough around the edges but as their set progressed and they picked up the temp-o it sounded better and was more fun. I know more fun is not a word, but who doesn’t want MORE FUN!

The man who stole the show for the night was The State of Nature. The State of Nature stood on the floor of the cretin, not the stage, with his ukulele around his neck. Held up by a piece of yarn if i may add. The State of Nature after the show was so excited that he had just put on his best show ever, and he did. He owned it! Surrounded by his friends singing along and dancing, how could an artist not have a great set.

There was plenty of rhyming, high-fiving, and the State of Nature. His friend (who also works at the Cretin) Willie rocked it on the water jug/drums and when he sang along during the Valentines Day song. Willie even joined in for a song on his punk rock stickered out ukulele. The State of Nature was worth my $5 for the night and I recommend you catch this kid around town when he has a show next. Who knows maybe it will top last nights! Remember “…were not the kids sitting on the couch!”

The City We Live In sprinkled themselves on the Cretin floor as well, featuring acoustic guitars, a cello, and a ukulele… they serenaded the Cretin. I didn’t ever expect to see an acoustic show at the Cretin, it was a little cool and a little weird – in a good way. The City We Live in sounded serene, it took me by surprise when these soft smooth vocals came out of a tall punk rock kid. I loved it! Everyone sat around them on the floor and it turned into an intimate musical date with The City We Live In. I know you will be able to catch The City We Live In because the city that they do live in is….. wait for it… Spokane.

Swear Andy Warhol was in Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk. Super skinny, big blonde hair with the bangs, black skinny pants, and a black turtleneck. I don’t know if that was what the kid was going for but, it looked like it. The only downer about Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk was that they took a while to step-up. When you are used to having a quick turnaround at the Cretin 45 minutes can seem like 2 hours. I do understand that they have lights and pedals and jazz to set-up though so I can’t complain too much! It was worth the wait. Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk did play on the floor guess it was the trend for the night. Stages… psh. From the first noise out of Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk, they didn’t stop once on their set. It was just song into song into song. Kind of badass. It was a mix-mash of electric snap, crackle, and pop. The kids at the Cretin dug it and it was cool of the baby birds to drop by T.C.’s nest.

Flood the Sun flooded my ears with punk rock music. Holy Lord, they never stopped. It was just bent over strummin’ like they were playing Guitar Hero on expert trying to beat the Devil. Flood the Sun has only been on tour for 1 week and a 1/2, and last night was their second night with a crowd. After hearing experimental music and acoustic music it seemed perfect to have the night end with a fast playing punk/rock band. The two microphones faced each other and the guys were playing towards each other. It looked cool when they were bouncing all over the place. One of the singers accidentally bumped into the other singer and caused his mouth to bleed. I think that describes the movement during their set. I would see these three guys from New Mexico any day of the year! Wouldn’t have spent my $5 on a Tuesday night anywhere else.

Godbear, Lithium ID, Reason for Existence, Deadones USA, Embrace the Kill & MDC
Tuesday, May 12th at The Cretin Hop

19 Lines of Punk from the Cretin MDC Show

1) Godbear was loud as usual but still owned it for being late and almost starting without their drummer!

2) Godbear also claims that they are from Oklahoma…I think it was the Western Wear and the Cowboy hats.

3) T.C. Should of made a drink called the MDC that consisted of Mad Dog and Champagne!

4) T.C. is a badass because he sticks to a time schedule, I hate when shows start late and there is a 40 minute wait in-between bands.

5) Godbear rocks for throwing buttons into the crowd, glad someone didn’t loose an eye and sad I didn’t get one.

6) According to T.C. The Cretin Hop is like the Make Wish Foundation, Godbear’s wish was to open for MDC and T.C. made it happen – I am so going to hell for repeating that.

7) Hayden Idaho’s Lithium ID rocked Bad Religion for the crowd… you-da-ho (as Matty would say).

8) The mosh pit looked like a giant blender since all the punk rockers had silver studs on their clothes. I asked and I guess it is quite the process to get them on your clothes. I wish I had patience to do it, it looks nifty!

9) As the singer from Spokane’s Reason For Existence said “You don’t have to dress punk to like it.”

10) Reason For Existence killed it, letting kids grab microphones and singing along. The singer even got smacked in the face with a mic and still went on. Very Impressive.

11) Deadones USA, sounded super clear and the music was tight. I guess T.C. is not in the band but that’s okay because they are fucking fantastic.

12) T.C. once again, made me laugh with his witty humor “It usually helps to go in the same direction in the mosh pit.”

13) The mosh pit had a loyalty in it, kids were helping kids out all there to have a good time.If you fell everyone was there to pick you up.

14) Embrace the Kill has the most animated metal singer I have ever seen, all the piercings on his face must of highlighted his crazy movements.

15) The drummer of Embrace the Kill is not only as fast as the speed of light but he is an intense growler/singer, very deep ear shaking vocals. Very Cool.

16) MDC started 30 years ago and the songs are still relevant today, it amazes Matty and me.

17) The front man for Millions of Dead Cops reminds me of Iggy Pop, they both are crazy mother fuckers on stage. They put on a wild set, all while the audience was screaming out songs for them to play.

18) How can you not spend (at max) $12 to go see 5 bands and 1 punk rock band that has been around longer then you were probably alive. It was a very cool night and it is always fun to go to the Cretin!

19) Spokane Punk is defiantly alive and Rollin’. Watch out for the Hogs!

Small Town Nation, From Ritual To Romance, Starting Over, From The Top, Good Kids Bad Ideas
4.3.2009 – The Cretin Hop – Spokane,WA

I put on my converses and headed over to Spokane’s only punk rock venue called The Cretin Hop. As soon as Jason, Matt, and I walked in we were greeted with a “this must be your first time in here,” by the very cool owner T.C.. The walls of the Cretin Hop are covered with DIY artwork, Ramone’s posters & stickers, monster heads, skulls, and pretty much anything punk rock – including a Social D blanket and Misfits flag. This place is almost too cool for Spokane; I was excited to see that we have our own little CBGB now!

The first band to take the stage was Good Kids Bad Ideas and this was my second time seeing the band. The first time I saw them they were having a hell of a day, so I was excited to see them in healthy working instrument conditions. Not only were they all together but they sounded 10x better! I was impressed; they are a cool group of kids that I guess have bad ideas? I dunno the keyboard player/singer’s mom was in the crowd and the band mentioned something about buying panties – I am not sure… but that my friend is a BAD IDEA. The boys were having fun on stage and they even brought a friend up on the stage to help do some back up vocals/screaming adding to their Happy Go Lucky Punk Rock! It was a great show, and these SFCC, Deer Park High School, and Gonzaga boys will be playing again soon so make sure to catch them!

from the topNext up was From the Top! Before I even talk about the band they have one of the coolest female band shirt designs, its gorgeous – check it out on their Myspace (it’s the background)! But on talk about the band they are from Cali and I would describe them as a funky little pop punk band with an intense shirtless drummer. The six boys were animated as hell and it was their first stop on their tour, I was talking with them earlier and they drove 22 HOURS to get to the Cretin – damn!!! Maybe it was the pink guitar that won me over but I like these kids, its a little bit hardcore but pretty pop punk. I could see them on Warped in future! Speaking of firsts, not only was it their first stop but it was the first time they were selling their CD’s on tour – their merch guy Cade was pretty cool (Good luck with the camera)! At the end of their set T.C. jumped up on stage and said they had a fancy keyboard stand, laughing how Californian’s have more money then us… I must say it was a cool keyboard stand though! Check these kids on myspace they are a great summer pop punk band – who knows maybe you’ll see them on Warped some time soon!

starting overStarting Over is another local Spokane band, that is true punk rock. They were a simple three-piece band and talented musicians at that. Their set was tight and I loved all the Whoa’s and Oh’s… great bass player as well! They were really cool… I wouldn’t mind seeing them again; they almost remind me of an early Offspring or Green Day. I loved how they opened their set with “Alright so we have some songs we are going to annoy you with … and our drummer just took off his shoes.” Starting Over I don’t think you annoyed the crowd, even the three year old girl in the crowd was dancing around. I also thought it was cool when they said “You paid to get in so it’s more your show then our show…” I have never heard a band say that, and it was a great show – worth my $6 without a doubt. Kids were skanking, clearing the floor (which was a little funny) and the band dedicated their last song to the little girl who was trying to skank dance with the big kids. Check out Starting Over – you won’t regret it.

from ritual to romanceThe one thing I picked up on was the quick turnaround between the bands playing, I think it was because all the bands stayed around and helped out – everyone helped everyone, which was badass! Number 4 to take the stage was also from California and they are known as From Ritual to Romance. California kids like keyboards – I like them too. FRTR was another hardcore punk band that was a little pop too but the thing that stood out to Matt and I was how the keyboard player would all the sudden just do some serious scream-o singing – it rocked. They also had the coolest blue bubbly looking drum set I have ever seen! I felt horrible their main singer was sick, and he pretty much had to sit down for part of a song… I guessed he blacked out. Kudos to you for fucking getting up on stage still rockin’ a show when you’re that sick, that’s dedication! I loved their simultaneous head banging and guitar playing (I am such a sucker for that). After their set they invited the crowd to hang out with them saying “We’re actually pretty nice for a bunch of Mexicans.” After no one would come hang out with them they said they would give you a free sticker if you came and talked – bribery and it worked. Support this band their outta money and their van broke down, you can check them out on myspace … tell your friends… Good Luck F.R.T.R – keep rockin’!

small town nationThe last band of the evening was Small Town Nation – also known as STN. One of my P.F.’s about this band was the air freshener hanging off the bass guitar, I wonder if that helps keep their music fresh too? These kids were full of piss and vinegar, they had an amazing way to start their set… they had a wireless guitar and started playing in the back of the Cretin and all came running out jumping and yelling – first time I have ever seen that. You could tell the band had been friends for a while, they had a following at the Cretin and they were up on stage just having a good time. Their pop punk music made you want to dance… one of the singer’s even rocked a New Found Glory shirt that read “Pop Punk’s Not Dead”on the back. The boys were goofy with comments like “It’s not hard to have a cock…” I dunno if that’s true, I mean what about uncontrollable boners now those are hard (did I just say that?) – anyhow their drummer looked like the singer in Fall Out Boy. They even stopped their set to put glasses and a Trucker Hat on him and did a mock-up version of “Sugar, We’re Going Down.” Maybe they can do a whole Fall Out Boy set one night – that would be fun. The tax boy bass player/singer, Fall Out Boy Drummer, Pop Punk’s Not Dead Singer/guitar, and the wireless jump on top of things guitar player made for a cool set and a fun show – like their myspace page says “rock, skate, and masturbate.” Overall the Cretin fucking rocks, as does T.C. – and the bands were cool, rocking out together, helping each other, and having a good time.
