Flying Spiders and Jason Webley

By Andrea Williams

Flying Spiders and Jason Webley at the A Club on Wednesday, February 2nd

Flying Spiders sounds tighter and tighter every time we see them! They are adding new musicians to the band and keep it exciting in Spokane! I am still shocked that 10 people can be on one stage and sound smooth and be so musically fresh and on the edge. It’s a group of passionate talented musicians and artists that when they come together create an explosion of organic hip hop! When else do you get to see a full band behind Som rapping and with MJ Beatboxing? Only when you are watching Flying Spiders! There were a few new editions to the Flying Spiders group tonight, including Dan Spalding on Baritone Sax and cellist Billy Mickelson from Bend, Oregon! The stage was covered with keys, drums, bass guitar, violin, guitar, saxophone, so much! I am a firm believer that Flying Spiders is the most exciting group that the Spokane Music Scene has to offer at the time. If you haven’t for some wild reason had the chance to see this group yet, you better get your ass out to a show. I Promise that you haven’t seen a band like Flying Spiders before in this town!

With no problem, Jason Webley can still balance his hat on his head while stomping his feet and rocking the accordion and of course singing. It was very nice of him to want to come back to Spokane! I know that Spokane wanted him to come back as well because there were a lot of familiar faces at the show.

Today was Groundhog Day and Jason Webley informed us that it is actually a Pagan holiday. So in honor of the Pagan holiday he asked us if we would be a bunch of strings. We all got to sing along with a ya, da, da, da. We also got to sing along to the song “my hair is a very very long hair, long long short and long; I hope I got the short long in the correct order! This is the bonus to a Jason Webley show! There is so much crowd interaction and he is such a character! The night is always unforgettable and he manages to make sure we are all having fun with music. One thing I didn’t notice about the last time he was in town was that he brought a small wood platform to stand on! Which makes so much more sense considering he is always stomping those feet!

Accordion or guitar (even though the guitar was having some issues) Jason Webley is talented and a creative smart writer. Instead of singing the Elephant song tonight Jason did a similar rhyming song where the word of choice this time was Bacteria. The words were a lot bigger harder words but I know I said the “ria” part right! Along with his own songs Jason Webley also rocked some covers of Michael Jackson, Sex Pistols, Operation Ivy, and even Bad Religion! I still like to consider Jason Webley as a Bavarian folk artist, he is quite lovely! If there was plenty of floor space I am sure I would have been waltzing around the room with friends. Since the floor was pretty full we all did get to point our index fingers to the sky and look them and spin, that was fun… got a little dizzy but I was loving it!

It was a little sad to hear that Jason Webley will be taking some time off however he was kind enough to tell us that on 11/11/11 he will be performing his last show (for some time) in Seattle at the Moore Theater! That would be a really fun road trip! Jason Webley had free sweaty hugs for us at the end of the night and was ready to set something on fire! Since it was an all ages show he was told it was time to wrap up however the entire place was screaming his name for an encore! It was another unforgettable show and thank you Jason Webley for making wonderful music and having fun with it!
