Langhorne Slim

By Andrea Williams

Langhorne Slim at the A Club on Monday, June 13th

I am a Langhorne Slim virgin ladies and gentlemen. Until tonight I hadn’t seen him in concert. I do know that the two Michelle’s I know, as in Riddle and Heyn, both love him and that was enough to make me check it out.

A gentlemen stood on stage known as Langhorne Slim with the bill of his hat almost covering his eyes and a guitar strap around his neck, behind him a drum set, to his right keys, to his left an upright bass. Upright bass and keys on the same stage instantly got me eager to hear their music. Right into the first song the twenty or so people on the floor started jumping around and dancing. I stood in the back just watching the people in front of me have a complete blast. At one point in the night a girl came up to me and said she drove five hours from B.C. to come to the show, that is dedication!

Langhorne Slim had some serious energy; I felt like I was at a punk rock alt-country show… and I loved it! Every member in the band was into their instruments yet smiling on stage and having a good time. Langhorne Slim even hopped off the stage and danced his way into the crowd a couple of times, all while still playing his guitar. It was almost impossible for me not to tap my feet to all of the songs, even when he performed a song alone on stage with his guitar and no band.

A lot of the songs were new to me but there was a song or two that had this playful piano tune that I can’t get out of my head. I do know one song for sure, the final song for the night “Say Yes.” It was a girl named Heather’s birthday in the crowd and he asked her to pick the final song since it was her birthday. Not only did Heather pick “Say Yes” but Langhorne Slim held out his hand and helped her on stage first and then helped a bunch of other ladies on stage as well. Before you knew it almost everyone that was on the floor was hoping up on stage and singing the chorus to the song with Slim and his band.

It was a bummer he didn’t get to play a little longer tonight because the show was an all age’s show and had to be over at 11pm. Well he started after 10pm, he did say next time he would play longer and he promised.

The show had such a positive feel for me because of how much fun his fans were having and the energy of the music. I really do hope Langhorne Slim comes back to Spokane and I have the chance to go. The fast songs were rockin’ and the mellow ones were sweet and romantic… and I am downloading some songs in iTunes right now. Next time he comes through town I think I may just be standing and dancing in the front row with everyone else.

Also side note, I do know next time that I need to wear my cowboy boots.
