Taste Tuesday’s at ZOLA on Tuesday, March 22nd
I was very intrigued about Taste Tuesday’s after seeing a photo of ZOLA packed on a Tuesday night. The idea of our city having a talent showcase with comedy and music was fascinating and after attending I was thrilled. It was a great balance of laughter and music which are two of my favorite things.
To get the night started was Horse Thieves featuring a favorite local artist of mine, Marshall McLean! We first saw Marshall in April of 2009 and ever since then have fallen for his music, style, and song writing. In fact the first time I saw Marshall McLean play was the first time I saw Matthew Winters play, funny coincidence.
Horse Thieves are delightful; they instantly warmed up the room and my ears. Horse Thieves is Marshall McLean, Adam Miller, and the lovely Fawn Dasovich. With a keyboard, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and three part harmonies it’s this blissfully folky country indie gem. Like finding the prefect pair of cow-boy boots that still have a shine but some wear. I love that both Adam and Marshall sing songs and when you put all three of their vocals together it’s elegant and rustic. They played songs for us including “Tumbleweed” and “It All Falls Down.”
After Horse Thieves first set came our host for the night Lance Paullin. He had us welcome ourselves and thanked us for supporting our nasty habits, drinking and what not. He made sure to keep the crowd on their toes and to set the rules straight. In other words don’t fucking talk when someone is on stage, got it. Lance had me laughing so hard my stomach hurt and my eyes were watering and then he quickly got off stage to welcome comedian Tony Nelson. I will say it was a bit hard to get people’s attention because it was loud as fuck in the room because people couldn’t stop talking about, as Lance said, last Saturday and who they blew. So I had a hard time hearing all of Tony’s jokes but a couple of the things he said had me giggling in my seat. Last but not least was the Talent Explosion featuring Aaron Fink and Dan Anderson who came out clapping and shouting in very tight black jeans and tucked in long sleeve button up shirts.
Talent Explosion just wanted to make sure to say Thank You to Paul Kendrick for booking them tonight and talked to us about eating Chicken Tenders. Also how Zola has cool dudes and hot moms. The Talent Explosion duo was hilarious and I couldn’t stop laughing. They even had to deliver an angel baby on stage. Yep, you read right an angel baby.
Overall the place was packed to the walls with $2 PBR beers floating around. Horse Thieves are complete gems and the comedians were laugh out loud funny. It’s awesome that the event is free and that it is going to be happening again next Tuesday. So if you are looking for a something fun to do on a Tuesday night that gets you both music and laughter ZOLA is the place you need to be.
A BIG round of applause to Patrick Kendrick with Platform Booking and Lance Paullin at LancePaullin.com for putting together such a fresh hip event in Spokane; we look forward to attending it again.
