Art on the Green & the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Street Fair

By Andrea Williams

Art on the Green & the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Street Fair on Saturday, July 31st

It was a perfect day to be outside, not to hot with a slight breeze and some shade; it was lovely. We made our trek over to Coeur d’Alene, managed to find free parking, and headed out for an afternoon of art, music, and treats!

We headed over to NIC College first for 42nd Annual Art on the Green. There were plenty of booths to walk in and out of featuring photographers, painters, ceramics, water colors, wood work, metal work, jewelry, sculptures, marshmallow guns, kids toys, just oodles and oodles of creativity. There were also a few cool pieces in the Juried Art Show including a glass and metal guitar! Part of Art of the Green showcases music with a North Stage and a South Stage. We managed to catch Coeurimba a marimbas group that had instruments spread out into the crowd. We also watched Mon Cheri, of course, play a few songs and we caught a little jazz from Swing Street! From about 10am until 7pm they had music going on between two stages. It was fun to hear Mon Cheri play as we walked through some vendor booths, the sound carries far!

After spending some time at Art on the Green we walked through the park and watched people play volleyball, kids run around, and saw plenty of puppy dogs. We even watched sail boats skate across Lake Coeur d’Alene. It was very relaxing! The 19th Annual Street Fair was just as packed as Art on the Green with people everywhere you looked. The people that play the flutes and guitars at all of the craft places were doing a cover of “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx. Yeah that was funny, we opted to not buy the album. Plenty of vendors, artists, and all of the regular art shops to see. Even street performers like Mr. Brown we saw outside of Java coffee. We went to one of my favorite shops call Wiggetts Antiques where I found a vintage skeleton key, which I adore and have been looking for one like it. Then on our walk back to Art on the Green we got stopped when Matt found one of Ruben’s paintings hanging in a window. Thus lead us to a killer gallery called Sum of 6! Which had record purses, paper shoes, and super cool drawings and paintings, very hip! Plus you can rent a locker and paint there! Definitely worth your time if you are over in the area!

Between the Street Fair and Art on the Green there is plenty to do and see on a Saturday afternoon. If anything it will give you some inspiration to get creative at home!
