Starting Fires
Here I am sitting outside around 7:45pm with Matthew Winters, Justin Knittel, a friend of theirs and two other girls… to get the math straight there was about six of us (not including PK who was inside). The sun was slowly setting and Patrick came out to light the log for the fire. Which by the way is so ironic as for today the Inlander published an article about the new fire code and sprinkler systems in venues around town, but I don't need to go into any more detail.
Every twenty minutes or so a few kids would show up as the sun just kept setting and before we knew it, it was dark the fire was warm and the music began. By far this was the most relaxing show I have been to in Spokane. I don't know if part of that was from the fumes of the fire log casing and the wine getting to me but I do know that part of it was the three talented musicians playing in front of me.
Three boys, three guitars, one fire. They causally took time playing songs and bouncing in between getting beers and PK's famous mimosa. People told stories and lounged around the fire, almost as if everyone was friends and we were all camping in the woods.
Familiar faces showed up and new friends were made the night was perfect. I am blown away by Justin Knittel, this was the second time I have seen him, he is so talented. Very much Spokane's version of Elliott Smith. I get goosebumps watching him play… everyone around me agreed and we were all swept up by Justin's music. I can't wait to see him play more songs.
Matthew Winters always a favorite, killed a scaled down acoustic version of Say Anything's "Alive with Glory of Love," and played other great tunes. Kevin Long arrived after playing a gig at Splash Down in his bathing suit but still manage to sweep the audience off their feet. Matthew's friend Amber Winders stopped by and played a tune on his guitar, she is awesome! It was like spoken word with a guitar and some singing, I hope we get to see more of her in the scene.
All three boys were smooth, clam, and sounded great. It only made me much more excited to go back on Friday night. For $5 I got to enjoy a summer night outside with live music around a campfire, I think I can handle that for two nights in a row… maybe even more!
