Sunday, October 11th at the Knitting Factory
Apostle of Hustle had a great stage presence with a plethora of instruments and a bottle of vodka. If I were to close my eyes while they played, I would think there were four or people on stage; but the two of them precisely owned it.
Every beat was on and vinyl was mixed, vodka was spit, and maraca's were shook. They had flags that dropped and they ate darkness. They have a strong theory behind their latest album but they still mix it into this complex music that feels light and full of percussion. It feels cultural and is dancy yet rockin'.
Their set was their own and no one else's; they were having a good time doing THEIR thing. Like Gogol Bordello. The two bands worked perfectly together.
Eugene, Elizabeth, Eliot, Yuri, Sergey, Tommy, Oren, Pedro, and Pamela are the sexy wild members of Gogol Bordello; the Immigrant Punk Revolution. Gogol Bordello is labeled gypsy punk and I wanted to get the correct definition of gypsy and the following is what I found. 1: a member of a traditionally itinerant people who originated in northern India and now live chiefly in south and southwest Asia, Europe, and North America. Each of the band members are from various countries around the world so I guess it fits. Either way it is one of the best live bands you could see.
Gogol Bordello is fast and fun punk rock to a tee. The show never stopped until the encore. It went from song to song and the next thing you know you were dripping in sweat and the show was over. It is very eclectic and you instantly clap and kick your feet. I danced all over the place, even by myself. They have strong lyrics and a great attitude that makes everyone have a good time.
When I first saw them at Sasquatch this year I was hooked. Their sound isn't like anyone else's and they seem like a really tight group of friends and musicians. They are also entertainers. I like when Elizabeth and Pamela change outfits, sing, dance, and play instruments.
My favorite instrument in the band is the accordion because it is used so much in their music and I rarely hear it today.
Last night was one of the best shows I have been to all year and I will make a point to see this band again and you should do the same. At least check out their music on their Myspace!
