Music at the Market: Jacob Butcher & Kim Piper with Marshall McLean & Fawn Dasovich

By Andrea Williams

Music at the Market: Jacob Butcher & Kim Piper with Marshall McLean & Fawn Dasovich on Saturday, May 14th at the Rocket Market on 43rd

Oh my gosh it was so GREAT to have the Music at the Market, Outdoor Concert Series kick off this weekend! Even with the insane wind, the sun still shined as a crowd of all ages filled in the seats and tables. Wine bottles were opened, snacks consumed, beer bottles of all sorts kept hands cool. Matt picked out our first two beers, which in case you don’t know the Rocket Market on 43rd has the best beer selection in town by far, just hundreds of beers (its glass cases full of crisp cold lovelies by the bottles). Back to the picking of the beers Matt had a Bitburger German Beer and I had a delicious Timmermans Strawberry Belgium Lambic Beer, oohhh it was so delightful and strawberry-ish! Later in the night I even managed to spilt a slice of Peanut Butter Cheesecake with my mom… can still taste the creamy peanut butter! Anyhow as you can imagine the setting is divine!

The charming Jacob Butcher and darling Kim Piper got the night going, they were the first two people to kick off the 2011 Outdoor Concert Series – yay! Jacob played his acoustic guitar and sang while Kim added in her violin. Jacob had me laughing in between each song; he was very friendly asking the crowd questions and having fun. One of the greatest things he did was ask the crowd if we knew how to dance, and five people raised their hands (three of them kids). He said okay so now all five of you should be up here dancing for this next song… and well the little kids did but he made a point to kind of stop and say hey wait a minute! He even showed us that he could do a jig WHILE playing his guitar, very impressive! No one still got up to dance, I didn’t, even though I did raise my hand.. I am sorry if I let you down Jacob. I was embarrassed!!! Jacob and Kim had a great chemistry the music was very peaceful and fun; under the sun outside it was perfect for the night. The crowd was very respectful tonight too (for both sets) everyone paid attention with minimal chatter. It was just a lovely evening. I don’t think I have seen Jacob Butcher perform before (other than in the Campfire Series Circle) and I really enjoyed his music so I do hope we get to see him again.

Marshall McLean took the stage next with Fawn Dasovich; Marshall on his guitar and Fawn on keys. Fawn also plays with Marshall in their band Horse Thieves. However it was really nice to see the two of them play together tonight. Marshall is the sweetest kid, he is so friendly and thankful for everything. My two favorite things about Marshall are his voice and song lyrics. He is also an incredible guitar player with his fast fingers. His song “Hurry Up Child” is such a sweet song about his son… it was requested tonight by Ruby and he was mentioning how its been so long since he has played it he almost forgot the lyrics, which was hard for him because he wrote it for his son four years ago. I am glad he played it and he did it without any noticeable mistakes! Marshall’s warm sound had my feet tapping all throughout his set. Along with “Hurry Up Child” Marshall and Fawn also played for us “It All Falls Down,” “Trouble,” “Long Way from Eden,” and many many more. Before he played “Trouble” he was talking about how you were always told it gets easier with age, and he had SUCH a good point, he said that instead I think you just get used to it. Each time I see Marshall I just fall in love with his music again and again. He is a very personable artist. His sound is unique and regardless if he is alone or with Fawn, or with Horse Thieves he still manages to charm the crowd over. Marshall has a few upcoming shows so you will have to keep an eye out for his name or Horse Thieves, and when you do see it on a show flyer, make sure to go because if you haven’t seen him you are missing out!

Music at the Market will contiue every Tuesday and Saturday throughout the summer. Click Here to see the rest of this months lineup.
