The 2011 Sommy Award’s

The 2011 Sommy Award’s at the A Club on Friday, March 18th

A big round of applause to Som for putting together the 6th Annual Sommy Awards! Som is always busy especially with his new (awesome) band the Flying Spiders and I know how hard it is to put on an event, so I want to make sure that he gets recognized for doing this in the local music community. I look forward to it every year and I think he does a great job making it fair and fun for the scene to get involved and vote. The next time you see him, you should tell him Thanks! Check out The Som Show Here.

This year the Sommy’s and its red carpet was at the A Club and featured live music from Yarn Owl, Team Growl, MJ the Human Beatbox, Silver Treason and a huge jam at the end of the night with cats from Groove Patrol and Real Life Rockaz. The night was also DJ’d by the lovely DJ Isis! However I will stop chatting and give you what you really want … the results!

Congratulations to all of the winners from tonight! Everyone mentioned above definitely deserves the award and it was cool to hear the excitement in the room when their names were mentioned.

To get the night rolling was Yarn Owl from Pullman and I absolutely adore them! I have seen them a handful of times and each time they get more and more sophisticated and sound cleaner and clearer. Its polish indie rock with a dusting of pop that is perfect for anyone’s iPod. The vocals and tunes float in through your ears and find a nest to stay in for a while. It’s perfect summer music too! YOU MUST SEE THIS BAND THEY ARE A LOCAL GEM!

I adore Team Growl and I have no problems seeing Team Growl two nights in a row! So yeah Click Here to see what I said about them last night!

MJ the Human Beatbox had everyone jaw dropped thinking …how does he do that… or I can’t believe all of that sound is coming from his mouth! It was so wild! Very talented kid, it’s just amazing to hear him create beats using his mouth… this is another act you need to see live!

Sliver Treason was up next and I can’t think of one person in Spokane that I know who doesn’t love this band. Jamie’s pedal steel reels me in instantly and Silver Treason as a whole is very top notch. They sounded awesome tonight and managed to get people up dancing around. Their rocking country sound is just as kick ass as their western wear… making their presentation as a whole a 10. The entire band is full of talented musicians and can keep a rhythm flowing just fine. We are always excited to see them live.

I did decide to go home after the final awards. I was a bit exhausted from the St. Paddy’s Day Block Party and I had to work… I know I sound like an old lady.

Overall I thought tonight was a blast! I am stoked for the bands that won and I am so glad Som pulled another successful Sommy’s off! I am so looking forward to next year!
