The Shondes

By Andrea Williams

The Shondes on Saturday, May 15th at the Empyrean

Brooklyn’s very own the Shondes made their way over to Spokane for the first time last night! It was the hottest day of the year by far, perfect weather for Parade Night. The only problem was it was like a sauna inside the Empyrean.

The Shondes have a new album out titled “My Dear One” which led them on a national tour. After a quick sound check something amazing happened. The singer of the Shondes asked for everyone to get up and come to the front on the floor to dance. For some reason like 85% of the room got up and that never happens! Kids were dancing the whole set, very cool!

The Shondes had great personalities and were interacting with the crowd in-between almost every song. They also informed us that they were on a quest to find Bill Murray. Even they were having fun on stage with each other, which was cool to see. They mentioned that we should buy their new album (which by the way you can get on vinyl with a digital download of the album) and a kid yelled its Spokane were poor! The singer popped back with a, we barter and see me after the show. I don’t know what happened but the kid had an album and I thought that was cool.

Musically the Shondes rock, it starts with their chic drummer counting the songs in and they all rock out on stage. No standing still, a lot of putting their bodies into the beat with the instruments. Plus they had a fiddler (who could also sing) and having that aspect in an indie rock band is so badass and hard to come by in Spokane. They have a classy aspect to their rock and seem like they love what they do. We had a great time and you know they did because they were sweating so much the lead female singer’s mascara was running down her cheeks. They put it all in for Spokane and we can’t wait to have them back!
