Wednesday 13 at the Whiskey A Go Go in LA

The Return of Wednesday 13 at the Whiskey A Go Go on Wednesday, July 13th

Driving by The Whiskey A Go Go at 6pm (an hour before doors opened) and seeing a line of people waiting to get in, I knew this was gonna be a killer show. With 5 opening bands, and Wednesday 13 not slated to hit the stage until 11:45, it was obvious he had a big following in Hollywood. As a matter of fact, all of Sunset Strip was packed with people waiting to get into the Key Club, The Whiskey, and the Roxy. It was rad to see the music scene on the strip was alive and well.

Wednesday July, 13th marked the first “Wednesday 13 Day”. I had never been to a show at the Whiskey, and I was going to make damn sure my first one was going to be a leave with my ears ringing until I made it back for the next one. I picked the right one. By the time Wednesday hit the stage, the show was fully sold out. The crowd, half dressed all in black, and the rest dressed as filthy rock corpses, I was more than amped to jump through the fuckin roof.

Right away I noticed the band was the same touring band from the Murderdolls (minus Joey Jordison). By the time they hit the stage it was a good 90 degrees in the Whiskey, and everyone was already drenched in sweat and dripping corpse makeup. They put the pedal to the floor right away opening with 2007’s “I Love To Say Fuck”. THAT SHIT SET IT OFF! From there it was nothing but rock and fuckin roll, dude. They played the title track off the new album “Calling All Corpses” (set to drop in October 2011). Wednesday wasted little time in between songs. Stopping to make sure people were drinking, and having a good time, and then the drums and guitar would kick into another track. One after the other, “Put Your Death Mask On”, “Rambo”, “Happily Ever Cadaver”, “Till Death Do Us Party”, “Faith In The Devil” and more. I was a bit surprised there wasn’t at least one Murderdolls song on the set list.

Wednesday does one or two of his own songs in a Dolls set sometimes, and since it was the same band on this set, I figured they might do one track from “Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls”. With almost an hour under the bands black studded belts, Wednesday told the crowd “Normally this is where the band walks off, and they turn down the lights (Wednesday then asked the light guy to dim the lights) and you guys start screaming ‘One More Song’, and the band comes out for an encore. Well, we don’t believe in that shit. Why don’t you guys do this, put your hands together and scream for me ‘One More Song’! You do that for a minute while I take a break and have a drink”. The crowd, without hesitation, jumped all over it as Shakes kept the beat going with the kick drum. They turned the house lights back up and Wednesday let us know, that even though he loved us all, and it wasn’t personal, he wanted “Bad Things To Happen To You”…

I wasn’t sure how long the set was going to be, and I think an hour was about perfect. After being soaked with sweat (about 50% was actually mine), out $30 for beer, a $56 parking ticket (you have to plug the meters until 2 a.m. Are you fucking kidding me?!), and my ears ringing to the point where I couldn’t hear shit, I was ready to chalk this show up to a big fucking WIN! I’ll tell ya, I can’t wait to catch the next Wednesday 13 day already. (FYI it’s in June, 2012)
